In a first case doctors in the US and Canada used a novel technique to treat her before she was born for a rare genetic disease that caused the death of two of her sisters. The doctors treated her in vitro, before she was born against Pompe disease at ottawa's children's hospital. She is now a healthy happy 16-month-old. This is a very good reason why genetic testing of parents before they have children is a good idea. Both parents would have to have the recessive gene for a child to be born with this disease. In time hopefully other genetic conditions can be treated this way and reduce the number of they term abortions.

In most cases it would be a mercy killing. Yes if you want to phrase it that way. It's more like feticide, rather than killing a sentient human being. But this offers hope. An estimated 70% of women who are diagnosed with down syndromes fetuses have abortions because they don't want to bring that kind of child into the world and burden the world with it and or they just can't handle it. It's her decision and I support her right to choose. But if that can be discovered in utero and treated and altered that would be fantastic then there would be no need for these abortions, it would be a win-win for everybody those who support the women's right to choose and those who do not.
