Interesting thing about slavery. The southern lifestyle was quite laid back. No one worked very hard, including the slaves. It was the southern culture. So, stories of backbreaking work by slaves was quite exaggerated. In fact, slave owners had large investments in their slaves and most cared for their welfare.

The downside occurred after emancipation. Now freed the former slaves still retained the laid-back culture of the south, which many saw as laziness.

The government was acting in the best interests of whites, which was unfortunate for blacks. However, those fortunes changed with the Civil Rights acts of the 1960's.
