Most Conservatives Still Believe The Civil War Wasn't Over Slavery

Civil War still divides Americans

So after 150 years, the majority of conservatives still believe the Civil War wasn't over slavery?

Why is this? Why do they believe the "States Rights" claim is sufficient enough to shield them from the fact that -- those states rights were those states preserving the right to maintain slavery -- so either way you slice it, the civil war was over slavery --

This is why whenever I see a conservative twisting themselves into pretzels to claim otherwise --- it makes their subsequent claims of not being racist look foolish.

Next time conservatives want to pretend that the Civil War wasn't over slavery -- they better travel back in time and tell all of those southern states to stop telling everyone it was over slavery

Slavery was a part of the Civil War but States Rights was the real reason the Civil war was fought.

States rights to own human beings as slaves.

You didn't complete the sentence. I did it for you.

It was about slavery and nothing else.

Tell me what right did those states want that the federal government wanted to take from them beyond the right to own human beings a slaves.

If secession was illegal, i would probably be on the other side of the fence on this. But it wasnt illegal.
Secession was, is, and always will be illegal.

“The constitution of a confederated republic, that is, of a national republic, formed of several states, is, or at least may be, not less an irrevocable form of government, than the constitution of a state formed and ratified by the aggregate of the several counties of the state.” Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story
Did you just quote a book? LOL
I quoted an authority on this subject. Unlike you.

I know books are anathema to most of the posters on this forum.

Sad.
You quoted a BOOK.
Show me where secession was illegal, you goddamn hack.
That was the Supreme Court justice in a case which decided secession is illegal, you ignorant ****.

And I have provided you proof from both the US Constitution and the Articles of Confederation.

Willfully blind monkey.

What a bunch of ignorant arguments. Congrats you idiots

More than 150 years later, the losers still won't take responsibility for the war. As if the US was supposed to just let them secede over slavery.

The war was about slavery. Period.
Why shouldn't they have been allowed to secede? Personally, I wish they had been allowed so I wouldn't have to deal with horrible people like George W. Bush today.
There are no provisions in the Constitution for secession. If the founders intended for states to come and go as they please, they would have established a procedure to do so.
Instead, they had provisions for joining the union and nothing about leaving it

The 2nd, 9th and 10th Amendments left that decision to the States and the people of those States.

.
The Supreme Court says otherwise

Yeah they thought Dread Scott was a good idea too. BTW that decision wasn't rendered until AFTER the war was over. What do you think the decision would have been had the south won? Don't pretend the supremes are infallible.

.
Dread Scott was overturned
The Supremes eventually get it right

There is nothing that supports the legality of secession in the Constitution

Slavery was a part of the Civil War but States Rights was the real reason the Civil war was fought.

Yea.....a States right to own slaves

Not many Southerners owned slaves you idiot.

States Rights was the biggest concern.

Ok what right did those states have that the federal government was trying to take from them beyond owning human beings as slaves?

I've asked that question for decades yet not one conservative can answer it honestly or without deflection.

So I invite you to be the first conservative to honestly answer that question without any filibuster or deflection.

The Civil War was over a state's right to secede.

The reason they seceded was slavery. or the fear U.S. expansion would put slave states in the minority.

But, make no mistake. The war was about seceding. Read Lincoln's inaugural address.
The issue was slavery

They never would have seceded if not for trying to preserve slavery forever
"Racism" Means Realism

Slavery saved the Blacks from savagery.
Slavery is more savage

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!

A willfully ignorant hack claiming to be a greater constitutional authority than a Supreme Court justice.

Priceless.

According to the tenth amendment to the Constitution, anything that is not expressly prohibited by the Constitution is allowed. Therefore, all states have a Constitutional right to secede. ... Although this amendment does not explicitly forbid secession, some have argued that it does so implicitly.Dec 28, 2003

Seems the 10th disagrees with you

Yea.....a States right to own slaves
A States right to make their own laws separate and distinct from the Federal Government.

They already had that right.

It's in the constitution.

What laws did they want to create that the federal government wouldn't allow them to enact? That is beyond owning human beings as slaves that is.

We had the same issues with “States Rights” during the Civil Rights struggle.

States insisted on a right to treat citizens as lesser citizens

Oh slavery was a part of it but the Southern States didn't like the Fed telling them what they could couldn't do.

Slavery was barbaric and I'm glad it was one of the things that was changed because of the civil war but it still wasn't the main reason for that war.

Social Justice Warriors just can't get past their emotions on this subject.

It is perfectly reasonable for a non-racist, slavery-hating, freedom and equality loving person to also admit that Civil War was not waged because of slavery, but because of secession.

Does it make somebody racist to admit the truth? Is that the fear?

The ONLY reason I even give a shit is because I hate watching people take a massive dump on logic. I hate the confederacy. I hate slavery. I love equality for all. And, I can still put aside my hate (emotion) and use my brain.

The WAR (not secession) was not about slavery because Lincoln stated in his inaugural address that he had no intention of abolishing slavery. He DID go on a tirade about secession.

Call slavery the catalyst. Call it the underlying cause. Call it the reason for secession. Whatever.

No reasonable mind would agree that a war would have occurred had no state seceded, for whatever reason.

Why is that so hard for you emotional little shits to admit?

The topic title has been proven. In spades.

No slavery, no secession.

The root cause of the war was about slavery. Period.

AAAAAAAnd you guys suck off tyrants. And like it.
Our Constitution made provisions for states joint the union. They said nothing about leaving it

Secession was treason

Really, it doesn't meet the Constitutional definition of treason.
