There are several thoughts on why Sanford did this horrible act of violence. Here are some things we know:
1. Sanford had PTSD from military service.
2. Sanford admitted to being a druggie a week prior to this senseless act of violence.
3. Sanford lived in Utah for a time and developed a relationship with an LDS girlfriend. (May be the person in the picture)
4. Sanford beat her and she tried to leave him. She got support from Church members including the Bishop.
5. Sanford claims he was told by Church leadership that he had to get rid of his tattoos in order to be baptized. This was most likely a lie by Sanford as members have never been told they had to get rid of tattoos to be a member of the Church.
6. The picture from Eric Swalwell that shows Sanford wearing a shirt with Trump and MAGA on it was photoshopped. I have posted the actual picture and will do so again for you.
7. One theory is he thought Kirk's shooter was a member of the Church and therefore guilty of Kirk's death. Yes, he is a member, probably excommunicated by now, but he was not a rightwing MAGA follower since MAGA is against trans everything. So is the LDS Church too as was Kirk and Turning Point USA. It makes no sense then that Sanford attacked the Church because of Robinson.
8. The best theory surrounds the girlfriend leaving him and the members supporting her and not him. PTSD and drugs limited his inhibitions.

I'm sure more conspiracy theories will come up. No reason to poopoo any of them at this point.
