NATO is a defensive alliance focused on collective security

  • Article 5 Focus: Collective defence dictates that members must protect one another from attack.
  • Article 51 Compliance: NATO's actions are aligned with the United Nations Charter's provision for collective self-defense.

When it comes down to it, what good is NATO? Does NATO defend us? No. We defend them. We pay the most dues and we provide most of the personnel and equipment. What does NATO do for us? Nothing.

NATO has a direct budget for shared headquarters and missions (roughly €4.6 billion in 2025). The US pays roughly 16% of this direct, common-funded budget, which was reduced from 22% in 2019 to better align with other members.

BUT YES, THE US MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS HUGE, DOD BUDGET OF $1 TRILLION HAS ABOUT HALF GOING TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR. Corps love them some welfare

The VA has its own separate budget and is not part of the Department of Defense budget. This includes veterans' medical care and disability compensation.

In summary, the VA budget is completely separate, while military retirement is a mix of DoD contributions and Treasury funding. Together, the combined spending of the DoD and VA in 2025 is estimated to be around $1.2 trillion.

Trump strengthened NATO by making them comply with their military spending commitments.
President Obama, particularly at the 2014 NATO Summit in Wales, urged allies to reverse declines in defense spending and meet the 2% of GDP target, addressing an imbalance in NATO burden-sharing. He pushed for this target in response to Russia's aggression, with members pledging to meet the 2% goal by 2024.
