Your kids may finally have to put their phone down after a bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation to set age restrictions on social media.

The lawmakers introduced a bill Wednesday that bans children younger than 13 from using social media platforms and requires parental consent for those between the ages of 13 and 17.

The move is among the first major bipartisan effort in Congress to restrict platforms for children and comes after lawmakers have recently pushed to make online platforms safer for children, including efforts to ban TikTok and regulate Instagram.

So, how does this get enforced?

If a parent lets their 12 year old on Facebook, how will the Fed Govt know and what will the punishment be?

Is this really something the Fed Govt needs to be involved in?

It should be noted it is a Bipartisan effort as both parties support a larger nanny state.

can't say I'm totally against it.

Just think of all the online pedophiles it would frustrate.

It's just kabuki..a feel-good thing. Given the buying power of minors on the net...this isn't going anywhere. This is a parental thing to solve..and i don't envy them.
It's a fact that minors are not allowed on most social until they are 13 anyway, from the OP link:

Most social media companies already prohibit users under 13 because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, otherwise known as COPPA. However, it's not strictly enforced.

There is no way to enforce it if the parent allows the child to join.

more than likely apps
If a parent lets their 12 year old on Facebook, how will the Fed Govt know and what will the punishment be?
Of course I have no certain way to know this but one way would be...Once a valid birthday [that would be the biggest problem but should be easy to verify] is established then an app would automatically either allow or disallow a user depending on the date
Is this really something the Fed Govt needs to be involved in?
absolutely not

that is the most dangerous part in all this.

Most Apps that are age restricted rely on the parent to be honest when the kid signs up. There is no real way for an App to verify the birthdate of a 12 or 13 year old.

Agreed

well then it just becomes a matter of the parents deciding what is and is not appropriate for their kids and accepting the consequences of their decision...the site would/should be off the hook

That's true today but they can work that out...the real drawback is we would all have to prove our age.

How can they even tell someone is a minor?

Maybe the answer isn’t banning but setting more guardrails through regulation and letting parents do the rest. Socila media is one of the most unregulated areas and we are only just beginning to realize the harm it causes.

My kids can do whatever they want with the money they make working in the lithium mines....as long as they give me half for rent, food, and my copyrights in their DNA. If that means buying a phone and tiktokking, more power to them

Didn't you have to be over 12 to be on Facebook anyhow? Any parent allowing their kid on social media is not a responsible adult, social media is the worst human invention, unless you're a narcissist.

You can’t buy cigarettes, drink , vote, drive or get on social media, but an abortion and sex change operation is A. okay!

Any parents who let's their kids spend hours and hours on social media are fucking idiots

demafasict want to pump physically healthy 12 year old boys up with the same drugs career sex offenders take to chemically castrate themselves, but it’s not ok for the same kid to buy a lotto ticket

What the fuck do those things have to do with a law banning kids from social media?

Can't you fucking people stay on topic at all?
