On Thanksgiving Day 1915 one William "Colonel Joe" Simmons, a defrocked Methodist minister, salesman, inveterate club-starter and drunk, recreated the Klan on Stone Mountain in Georgia. Simmons also had no involvement in politics.
Simmons' Klan, once he hired a PR team (because he was mainly interested in making money off memberships by milking the racism of the time) actually grew to be far larger and far more widespread than the original. By the 1920s it was getting into politics, supporting and electing a Senator in Colorado, a Governor in Indiana, a mayor in Portland (OR) a Governor in Maine, a Governor in Colorado and most of the city council of Anaheim--- all of whom were Republicans.
Now you go ahead and essplain to the class why a "Democrat" organization would be working to elect Republicans against its own people. This oughta be good.
Oh and that Klan had expanded its target beyond just blacks--- it was also against Jews, Catholics, immigrants and labor unions--- all of which were and still are Democratic Party constituents.

Pogo is 100% correct. Blacks never voted for Democrats until the 1930s with FDR. And Democrats got virtually all of the black vote starting in the 1960s, thanks to Barry Goldwater and the Republican opposition to the Civil Rights Act. Southern Democrats like Strom Thurmond from South Carolina became Republicans in the 1960s, because they were against the Civil Rights Act.

The Democratic Party was founded in 1792 and had become the majority party in Congress in the 1820's and were responsible for expanding slavery. Deal with it.
