Hypersonic weapons could be “catastrophic” for the most potent aircraft carrier group in the US fleet, according to war game simulations run by a team of military planners in China.
Over 20 intense battles, Chinese forces sank the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier fleet with a volley of 24 hypersonic anti-ship missiles, in a simulation run on a mainstream war game software platform used by China’s military.
In the scenario, the US vessels are attacked after continuing to approach a China-claimed island in the South China Sea despite repeated warnings.
A paper detailing the war game was published in May by the Chinese-language Journal of Test and Measurement Technology. It is the first time the results of simulated hypersonic strikes against a US carrier group have been made public.

The researchers, led by Cao Hongsong from the North University of China, said almost every US surface vessel was shattered by the attack and eventually sank in the simulation.
The war games suggested the US carrier group – previously regarded as unsinkable by conventional weapons – could be “destroyed with certainty” by a relatively small number of hypersonic strikes, they said.

The technology to intercept or nullify these hypersonic missiles is.going to need to be invented. Regardless, the true life or death advantage is held in U.S nuclear subs.
And if e.g. nuclear subs and their weaponry goes into action - the world goes boom. So it's a meaning less and totally outdated weapon system - kept alive to make the military industrial complex happy at all costs.

Well, if we get technical, China doesnt have the nuclear capailities alone to destroy the U.S, only the U.S and Russia have such nuclear capabaility. I agree though that nuclear war should be off the table in warfare. Our species will never learn until we eventually go the way of the Dodo Bird.

What makes you think that e.g. China want's a nuclear war?
China is realistically estimated to have 600-800 nuclear warheads - enough to fuck up the entire planet - any number surpassing that, has been rightfully recognized and termed "overkill" since latest in the 70's. But "overkill" provides big $$ for some people.

In order to maintain this so called status quo - certain countries keep or modernize their nuclear inventory. However I do trust the human character/species to come up with something far better in the future - maybe a single device then can blow up the whole planet in one go.

Till then - the conventional component of warfare will still be the number one means of enforcing views or demands onto others.

China doesn't want a nuclear war, no one does. The reality is though that America and Russia both have more DEPLOYED nukes than any other nation even has Total (China has none deployed).. If a nuke war were to occur, any nation not named America or Russia wouldn't have the capability to respond with any degree of speed or equivalence.

But.... do the Chinese use correct pronouns? Huh! Huh! How about their diversity score? Bet, they don't have gay or trans admirals. Bet they aren't relying on black female pilots.

(China has none deployed)..
??? - off course they have- around 200 are in permanent readiness. - including those on SSBN's.
Not my kind of source - but interesting to read though.

China, meanwhile, has recently surpassed 400. And while the difference in stock is significant, a Pentagon report released in November said China is building its nuclear stockpile at an increasingly fast pace, and could have roughly 1,500 nuclear warheads by 2035 if they maintained that pace.

The US missile sub fleet is exactly what keeps China in a kowtow militarily to the US.

Having written the above, I should mention I think Xi is a far tougher leader than Putin.

Here’s a secret for you. Just before Midway, the Japanese war gamed the battle and had a massive victory without losses. War games are only as accurate as the assumptions they are based upon. The Chinese have never fought a modern war, their doctrines are untested and their ships are based on Russian design philosophies. No one has claimed that US carriers are unsinkable, but their task forces specialize in defense in depth making it really hard to get weapons through to the carrier.
even if the Chinese manage to sink one carrier, the USN has more, plus subs carrying land attack missiles that would destroy the PLAN in its harbors.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is custom made to be intercepted by China's bevy of H/S missiles. While the "light & ignite" tinder box carriers of WW2(flight decks were made out of wood back then) WERE the hot ticket back then they still were easy targets for the ridiculously slow Japanese kamikazes. With current technology things have "sped up" a tad. Most likely if a military conflict does happen between China & our USA any U.S. task force(s) with in range of China's H/S missiles would be permanently anchored in Davey Jones Locker within a half our or so.

Making the assumption that their weapons work as stated. The Russians have found their weapons aren't as good as they told everyone.
However, China fighting from home would have a massive advantage over the US navy, it would not be able to get close to the Chinese mainland unless they could take out such threats.
