Maybe someone explain to me why do we need lots of troops in Afghanistan?

I curious as to why we need our young men and women there on the ground?

What is America really looking to accomplish there in Afghanistan that cannot be done through other means like drones and from the air?

Cause if we pull em out it will raise the unemployment numbers.
