Maryland institutes rain tax to raise money for Chesapeake Bay estuary

A "storm management fee" will be imposed on Maryland residents by Gov. Martin O'Malley — meaning that Maryland is essentially going to tax the rain that falls on people’s property. The bill apparently stems from an order from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the Chesapeake Bay estuary. The rationale is that since "roofs, driveways and carparks create more potential for drainage problems and water contamination," a fundraising fee will be assessed based on the size of the building and surrounding paved surfaces. We're guessing Phase 2 of the plan involves literally taking the food out of Maryland residents' mouths to se

I would collect the rain water in a bucket.. OOPS cant EPA is against that too since they think the US government owns everything

Nothing new there, many municipalities have been doing that for years, some bill you based on the size of your roof, and rain amounts.

An the fact that that they have been doing THAT for years justifies it? Slavery was justified for years.

I thought the cons idea was to let the free market handle everything. What free market is going to clean up the bay? How much profit can they make?

What? No legitmate response from the left?

How can these fools continue to support politicians who institute this kind of legislation?

At least they aren't making excuses for this stupidity ---- yet...

Taxing the rain?.

Not unless the tax bill increases or decreases based on actual rainfall.

Although they may be trying to justify it based on some theory about water runoff, the additional taxation is based on buildings and improvements.

So what is it, really?

Nothing more than an increase on real estate taxes.
