LEWISTON, Maine — Police say a Lewiston woman is facing charges after showing up at an elementary school with a handgun tucked into the waistband of her pants.

Police say 30-year-old Tylor Austin had a 9 mm pistol when she walked into the principal's office at Montello Elementary School to pick up her three children Friday morning. She is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Lt. Mark Cornelio said Austin didn't make any threats and later told police she was carrying the gun for self-defense after taking out a protection order arising from a bad relationship. The school went into lockdown before police arrived. Nobody was hurt.

I worked in a jewelry store, and I went into the safe to get some diamonds. I felt around in the safe and found a plastic bag I thought were the diamonds. I grabbed the bag and realized I had a loaded .357 magnum pointed at my chest. One of the sales women had put her loaded gun in the safe. She told me sometimes her gun falls out of her purse at the supermarket.

I disagree.

I think women especially should have the right to carry a gun.

But maybe a gun of a lesser caliber that is easier for them to handle.

It's up to the woman.

I can understand if she wants to carry it in her car but not into a school! For the no firearm sign on the door might have tipped her off.

Here's an example of why women need a lower caliber....

C o m p e t e n c e doesn't depend on your genitals being the type that's hidden away or the type that isn't so hidden away.

The size of the hand may have something to do with the frame size but not the calibre of the handgun.

Long weapons, well, similar I suppose. I saw a woman hurt herself with a shotgun when she didn't hold it in tightly enough and I also saw a bloke do exactly the same thing.

I remember being in Disneyland (Anaheim) a few years ago and a woman near me was wearing a tee shirt (you've probably all seen it but it made me crack up laughing)

"Handgun + PMS any questions?"

No ma'am, no questions

The woman made an error in judgement.

I applaude her for packing though, since here in Maine, woman who have taken out protection for abuse orders are OFTEN killed by the cretins they're trying to get away from.

A couple years back, one women who had returned to her former home with TWO POLICE ESCORTS was shot to death by the man she'd been trying to escape.

Yeah, that's right.

While these so-called cops stood around good old boying in sympathy with the guy that the woman had taken a court order out because he'd been beating her, that woman was SHOT right in front of their eyes.

So can you really BLAME that woman for taking steps NOT to victimized?

I can't.

Cops are often worthless when it comes to domestic violence.

They're often WORSE than worthless, since they're often are sympathetic to the men involved and assume that the woman is just being hysterical.

That attitude is changing, but not rapidly enough to suit me.

Those "no firearm" signs work really well, especially for the mentals who come into the schools looking to kill as many as possible. "Oh crap, I can't bring this gun into the school. Guess I won't be able to shoot anyone today".

I am glad to see you support the right to carry.

I agree with you Chris. Probably not a good idea to generalize tho. Many woman, my wife for one, feel very comfortable with large caliber handguns, while others find smaller, lighter sidearms more to their liking.

Carrying a firearm you're not comfortable with could be worse than having no weapon at all.

I personally often carry a .22 because it is small, light and comfortable.

For those that would prefer a smaller caliber weapon, I recommend the Walther P22, the Beretta Bobcat .22, or the Phoenix Arms HP22. All three are concealable. The Phoenix Arms HP22 retails for $150 and comes with a lifetime warranty.
