First the sequester was in the bill only because it was the only way Obama would sign it. Republicans wanted to pass a spending bill with the promise of listed spending cuts. The sequester was in place so that of the Republicans failed to make those cuts, then a across the board spending cut would occur - the sequester. The Republicans came up with no cuts. The Sequester happened.
By the time the sequester took effect Obama already slashed the deficit by half.
The sequester helped some but don't credit the Republicans.
And certainly it is not the reason for the bulk of the reductions .
