Liz Cheney: The U.S. Is ‘Sleepwalking Into Dictatorship’

Trump has "told us what he will do," the Republican former congresswoman said in preview clips from an interview.

Liz Cheney, the former Republican representative from Wyoming, expressed deep concern in an interview about American democracy’s ability to survive another four-year presidential term for Donald Trump.

In clips shared Friday from the interview that will air on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Cheney told host Josh Dickerson that Americans can’t entirely rely on Congress and the judicial system to rein in Trump ― the clear front-runner at this point for the GOP presidential nomination despite facing 91 felony charges linked to his 2016 campaign, his 2020 reelection loss and his mishandling of classified documents.

“He’s told us what he will do. It’s very easy to see the steps that he will take,” Cheney said.

“People who say ‘Well, if he’s elected, it’s not that dangerous because we have all of these checks and balances’ don’t fully understand the extent to which the Republicans in Congress today have been co-opted. … One of the things that we see happening today is a sort of a sleepwalking into dictatorship in the United States.”

Johnson was one of the biggest cheerleaders of Trump’s ill-fated attempt to claim victory in the 2020 election won by Joe Biden. Shortly after the election, Johnson led an amicus brief backing a Texas lawsuit asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the vote.

Cheney raised similar concerns about Johnson during a podcast appearance last month.

In a quote from the interview released by CBS News, Cheney slammed newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) as someone who “knows ... that what he’s doing and saying is wrong, but he’s willing to do it in an effort to please Donald Trump.”

I totally agree! It's a scary and dangerous path that we're on! What do you think?

And the biggest reason is the electoral system. But most people are like "no, this is the electoral system we have, we can't change it" or "we're not Europe" or "We already have Proportional Representation" or "why do my knuckles drag on the floor?"

We've had the opportunity to nominate someone else, but my party is determinned to go out losing.
It's really very sad, because Biden would be so fucking easy to beat, and what are we going to do? We're going to run the only guy in America that can't beat him.

WRONG!

I dislike Trump, but clearly is can beat Biden, is beating Biden, and is the only candidate who can beat Biden.

Wrong.
We want the electoral college system to prevent the most corrupt large cities from taking over in a dictatorship.
In large cities, the vote is up for sale by a corrupt media, corrupt unions, and greedy populations.
Large cities are like lynch mobs.

I'm sure it might feel that way to a poor Republican, but the dictator lovers are only a quarter of the country and a lot of people are violently against it including all the law enforcement and government. Only Brainwashed functional morons aren't.

I don't think so.
I think we have actually had a dictatorship since the Spanish American war, and it was Hearst who was the first dictator.
What the dictators learned from the progression of the Roman Empire to the British Empire, is that being a dictator is easier if you simply hide it.

liz Cheney is a typical washington swamp rat

She is part of the encrusted political elite who was shocked and unprepared to deal with a populist winning the white house

The elements of Dictatorship have been present and growing since Nixon with each successive administration tacking on more burden to the masses for the sake of power retention. Where have you been living?

It's a conspiracy!!! Right, conspiracy nut job? That's crazy there is no evidence of any such thing. Historians have it basically right. i'm not crazy about Anglo American ethnocentric baloney though. English channel and the Atlantic Ocean don't mean so much anymore, time to get along with other countries and get over the narcissism. English speakers are no better than anyone else personally, not having a need for an army is a tremendous advantage LOL in capitalism and colonialism and wars in general.... Vive La France obviously LOL... a little more socialist please And understanding what socialism is would be a nice change...

I think Cheney is scum begot by scum.

The US has been a military dictatorship forever; Cheney is trying to preserve that & support the escalation of WWIII by attacking outsider Trump & his anti-war ways.

Wrong.
We want the electoral college system to prevent the most corrupt large cities from taking over in a dictatorship.

Large cities are like lynch mobs.

The problem is you don't understand what would happen if you changed. You seem to think that the only change would be in large cities taking over.

It wouldn't be like that.

The example: Germany

Germany has Proportional Representation. One Land (state) has 21% of the population, Nord Rhein Westphalia, 18 million of 84 million people.

Does this Land control German politics? No, it does not. It's also a very dense Land, the most dense except for the three city states of Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg.

The US's population density is 87 people per square mile. Germany has 611 people per square mile and Nord Rhein Westphalia has a population density more than double that.

So what happens?

Well, they had 29.1% vote for the SPD (equivalent of the Dems) and 26% vote for the CDU (equivalent of the Reps) and then 16% for the Greens, and smaller percentages for others.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has the lowest population density. It's largest city is Rostock with 200,000 people in it. Larger than Maine's largest city, but not so huge like Chicago, New York etc etc.

29.1% of people voted for the SPD, 17.4% for the CDU, 7.8% for the Greens... and so on.

The reality is if you get rid of FPTP, politics doesn't become about the Big Cities v. the countryside. It becomes more sensible, it becomes about real issues rather than issues that are made to support the FPTP system.

The other reality is the main two parties get way less votes. They don't have the power to rule alone, they need smaller parties. People get real choice.

In California, the state which gave the most votes to Trump in 2020, 6 million people didn't get a say in anything because all EC votes went to Biden. In Germany, if a party gets more than 5% of the vote, then all votes count. If one person in Wyoming votes for Party X and nationally that party gets 5% then the one vote counts towards the pile of votes and determines who gets how many seats.

And yes, the votes are up for sale, not just in large cities, but all over. In the Presidential election it depends on whether you're a swing state or not. The swing states get ALL THE ATTENTION and fork the rest of the states.

This is a map from the 2008 elections. Notice which are the swing states and notice you can't see those that aren't. Georgia has changed, it'll be getting lots more money these days, but everyone else, they don't really partake in the US presidential election.

In Germany A) they spend way less. They spend LESS per election than the most expensive of the senate seats B) it's about the whole country, not about specific areas and C) parties stand for different things, not like the reps and dems standing for a few things and afraid to stand for other things for fear of alienating half the country. You stand for what you want in Germany and those who support it will vote for it.

You can change political parties very quickly too.

In the UK with FPTP they had UKIP. After 30 or 40 years UKIP managed to get 12.6% of the vote in 2015. They got one seat (because FPTP sucks). In Germany the AfD, founded in 2012, gained 12.6% of the vote in 2017 and gained 90 seats. The big parties trembled in Germany, in the UK they didn't care.

From the OP:

After serving three terms in Congress, Cheney lost her Wyoming primary last year, an outcome widely attributed to her going against the GOP and voting to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
And now needs Butt Hurt Cream

One would think that almost anyone could beat Biden, yet Trump did not. But, then, one would have thought that almost anyone could beat Trump, and Biden did not the first time. Thus, both should be embarrassed.
Today, it seems to this poster that any number of candidates would be more popular than the two so far on offer by the duopoly. It is perplexing that I could be so wrong. That my countrymen and I are so out of step, that what is valuable could be so different, surprises me.

We all know who the dictators are if we experience it. It is easy. We only have two choices to vote for. And their politics are wild in expanse and can even be detrimental to themselves. We do not have to defund the police. Just eliminate the simple stuff and stop rewarding and enforcing things that they can help people with. Even if they are drinking a little. There was a time they were more like that. And there are a percentage who still are. To many families screwed up from them. And we are now on the road to vengeance. So, the laws and the judicial system needs a renovation or those involved eliminated from existence.

Liz Cheney is the one who covered up the fact that MLK plagiarized his PhD thesis at Boston university when the story broke in the Wall St. Journal.
