Liz Cheney Future

I read an article today (not really necessary to post the link) about Liz Cheney who has, more or less, accepted the fact that she will be soundly defeated in the soon to be Wyoming primaries, even with help from democrats. The article suggested that she has been actually looking past the 2022 primaries and working on building some kind of a framework to run for president in 2024, either on the Republican ticket, or running as an independent. I seriously doubt she would run for the Republican nomination because both leading pollers right now are Trump and Desantis, so, I don't see her with a lick of chance of winning the Republican nomination. The article implied that she would not change parties and run for the Democratic nomination. So, that leaves her with a possible option of running in 2024 as an independent. My question is this:

If she were to run as an independent in 2024, which side would she draw votes from? In other words, would she hurt the Republican nominee more or the Democratic nominee more? She probably thinks this would be paybacks against the Republican party for what they did to her, taking votes away from the Republican nominee and helping the Democratic nominee win the election. But, I'm not so sure it would come down like that. I think she would actually draw more votes from democratic voters than Republican voters, helping the Republican nominee win the election. What say you?

This is not even a question. Of course she would not draw from the left, that is asinine. She is not a democrat.

There is a rather large segment of the republican party that does not like Trump, that is an established fact. It matters not what one may or may not think of that constituency but that is the ONLY people that would vote for her and they are all republican votes.

If she runs as an independent it will not be to win, it will be to damage Trump. And it will work if she can get it off the ground. I think it is far more likely that she gets nowhere though as no one will think she has a snowballs chance in hell.

She won't draw enough votes from either Democrats or Republicans to even match the number of illegals who would vote in the election. She is one microbe in the Pacific Ocean. If she had a weenie roast for all of her supporters she wouldn't even need any donations to fund it. And I'm saying that as a Republican who is not a Trump supporter.

Nothing would be better for the country than to have serious contenders running as independents.

I think Chaney will go on the shortlist of politicians that have gone against their party and their constituency to support something they believe is right. She will go down just like the rest. The lesson to be learned is never go against your party and your constituency, no matter how right the cause. In America today, the order of priority is party first, your candidacy second, and your country last. Although politicians rave on about patriotism, there are no patriot politicians today.

I guess it depends on your definition of who a serious contender is.

If your only concern is the next presidential election, you're right. However, I find myself far more concerned with the direction of the two party system where each party has full control of goverment only 1/3 of the time. The remainder of the time neither party accomplishes that much. What really pisses me off is the the party that controls the White House uses the power of the presidency to undermine legislation passed by the other party. The majority of Americans have little faith in the candidates they vote for. They are just trying to choose between the lesser of two evils.

With republicans moving further to right and democrats moving further to the left, there is little room for moderates who find little to like in either party. If America is to survive and move forward, we are going to have to come together as a country and become the United States once again. 17% of American lean left, 13% lean right, and 7% are true independents. That's 37% of voters who are not enamored with either party. There's certainly room for a 3rd party.

I totally agree, except for the fact that a viable third party is about as likely as winning the lottery or, more precisely, beating the Casino House. The House has the odds stacked in their favor so they cannot lose. There have been numerous tries at third parties, all failures. Not too long ago we had the Reform party, gone. Tea Party, gone. Green Party, non existant. Libertarian Party, non existant. Forward Party, good luck.

What does seem to be happening though is on both sides we have groups trying to take over the party and tying to hijack it into something different. Bernie Sanders and Co have tried this to no avail. Libertarians and Tea Partiers tried taking over the Republican party to no avail. However, you could say that Trump nationalists and populists have indeed been successful in taking over the Republican party and turning it into something different.

Those having aspirations for a viable third party just don't get the fact that they will not see it happen in their lifetimes. In fact, you can plant seeds and even if the seeds grow, as we have already seen, it can all be for nothing in the long run. As noble as it is, sometimes the fight is more important to the third partiers than actually seeing any concrete results. You keep on chasing after that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow which just isn't there.

Until we change election laws, a 3rd party candidate will not have a chance because most of the billions of dollars that go into presidential campaigns comes mostly from large corporations, pacs, and other special interest groups, not the voters.

And how do you plan to change election laws when laws can only be changed by Democrats and Republicans?

I don't expect it to change as the country blunders down it's current path for at least a century. As global warming starts destroying nations, the UN will become the world goverment so many conservatives fear today.

Never heard that one before.
