A lot of people were hoping and expecting a big Lions comeback this year but they're not going to see it. They have been eliminated from the Playoffs. Mind you, they still have a mathematical chance but the chances of Green Bay losing both final games (including one to disheveled Baltimore) is virtually ZERO. But not only was the Lions eliminated tonight, but in one of the wildest finishes in history. A game no one will soon forget.
  • The first half was uneventful with Pittsburgh leading, but it was mainly a low scoring defensive game.

  • Pittsburgh came out for the 2nd half and it was lights out Steelers. The Lions only had the ball for three plays in the 3rd quarter for -3 yards offense.

  • The entire game happened in the 4th quarter.
    • First, Pittsburgh kicked a FG for three points. This is the best kicker in the NFL. He is nearly automatic at 60 yards. All he had to do was kick an easy 37 yard FG to put the game out of Lion's reach, but instead, he hit the upright for no points.
    • Then Pittsburgh missed innumerable interception opportunities. One Pittsburgh player was hit three times in the numbers for an interception and DROPPED ALL THREE. This missed FG kept Lions in the game.
    • With only a few seconds left on the clock, Detroit tries to get a TD to finish the game, but the receiver was STOPPED at the one foot line for an incompletion, but then, Goff picked up the ball and ran it in for a TD WINNING THE GAME FOR THE LIONS.
Yet the Lions still lost. It took four refs 5 minutes and with consultation with NY to figure it out. Apparently there was some new, obscure rule involved. The pass was ruled incomplete, but it is unclear who or when the play was ruled dead, but they finally decided that Goff did in fact pick up the ball and run it back for a TD. But it did not count. Why?

If I understand it right, the clock had run out by the time Goff ran it in for a TD plus Goff was guilty of OPI, not sure why, and because the clock had run out, you cannot advance the score after the clock hits zero and they could not assign the penalty for OPI because the clock had run out (there was more to it), but the conclusion was that the Lions were stopped on the one foot line and they're winning TD was nullified by a penalty plus the clock running out, so because of that, game over, Pittsburgh win by 29-24 and the Lions are eliminated. They have two hard games left to play, their division opponents have easy games they'd have to lose, and the rest of Pittsburgh's games are easy:
  • The Browns, which Pittsburgh better demolish.
  • The Ravens, which are battered and Jackson is in bad shape.
Detroit is effectively eliminated and Pittsburgh will likely finish 11-6, worst case: 10-7.

There was offensive interference as the receiver pushed the defensive back off him by about 3 feet. It didn’t matter what happened after that on the reception and fumble and TD the Steelers accepted the penalty for the years.

The Offensive pass interference looked pretty tame? One of those "looks like every other play" situations where they don't call it. DB appeared frozen staring into the backfield? Also in the way of reciever route in tight quarters. Probably a good play by PITT . PITT played better overall.

But the game was lost when DET gave up two long runs (45yds) around the end for TD in the 4th quarter. Nobody touched the runner, nobody home? Weird.

Game so bad it almost looked fixed? DET offense weird? I guess the co-ordinator is in CHI?

so weird of game, chess match then it opens up, warren I think gets two TD with 45 yard rushes but the lions were not sleeping, they could have won this game but the WR intentionally plowed into a D to give him room and was caught

amazed at rogers though, 41 and he does not throw the ball, he just flicks a perfect pass, perfect spiral and makes it look like a walk in the park

experience matters

steelers will make the playoffs again but not go far, just too many good teams ahead of them

just glad to see KC out, just no patriots, denver or the bills

oh yea. Go Steelers.

Amazing as it seems, Pittsburgh seems to be peaking at just the right time.
  1. This is their 3rd win in a row, first beating Baltimore, then trouncing Miami, and now beating the Lions, which was their hardest of three remaining games, that I thought they'd lose.
  2. Aaron Roger by many accounts, is playing his best ball in years.
  3. Pittsburgh's offense and defense are both clicking better now than all season.
  4. By next Sunday, Pittsburgh should have several key players back to finish the season.
I now give them pretty good odds of not only getting into the Playoffs, not as a Wildcard for a change, but with winning one game. Steelers are not going to the SB, but at least they've made some waves.

The strangest aspect of the game was Gibbs and Montgomery were non factors. It's amazing Goff even made it close. Definite PI on St. Brown on the last play.

Actually, Rogers just turned 42. He is old enough to be father to some of the other players on the team.

You forget the stupid Lions left enough time on the clock for Pittsburg to tie the game at the end of the first half. I will continue to read what you wrote.

Did I hear Aaron Rogers admit he didn't see any pass interference?

I'm a Lions fan. This is SOL. We are okay with getting screwed. It's all part of being a Lions fan. We are used to it. And at least now we won't have our hopes up that maybe we will finally see one ******* playoff win. LOL.

Yeah, Gibbs who is their top weapon was nearly taken out of the game. Also, with only 3 minutes on the clock when Pittsburgh should have been running the clock down ASAP to protect their lead, Steeler players kept running out of bounds!

herbig is good and out and watt with the lung issue which is serious might not be ready but their D kept the lions to very few running yards

I was shocked with money fluttered the ball and hit the post dead on, that's 8 points so basically a slim chance with a 2pt to tie

Nothing seemed definite.

The receiver on NE was stiff arming the BALT DB down the field to end zone in the first quarter, no call outside 5 yards. Examples all the time. Go ignored. Then on a game deciding play....

Looks like Im wrong on him? He ran one in last week and he made good to great throws today.

I thought they threw a flag against the lions for pass interference, so yes Goff scored a TD but the penalty negated the TD?

Pittsburg has a tight end the size of Shaq.

Love hurt himself. His back up QB was pretty good. But they could lose the next two games, maybe, probably not. Not gonna count on it.

Last night a buddy told me we were rooting for Green Bay to win. I find that hard to believe because the Bears were in first place at the time. Wouldn't it be easier for us to catch Green Bay? But he said if Green Bay loses, they would have to lose another game and they probably won't. But we are playing the Bears the last game of the year, right? So if Green Bay beat the bears and we beat the bears, we would have gotten the wild card.

Now I hope we rest Stafford and Aiden Hutchensen and phone it in the rest of the year. Be healthy next year. **** the NFL.

well you don't get to like 5th all time with TD's and not be mighty skilled, each throw is just like taking a stroll, seems effortless

his accuracy is really freaking good plus timing

he torched the steelers plenty with GB for many years, I recall

St. Brown ran straight up to the DB and pushed him back 3 yards with both arms. That's about as clear as it gets.

Yep. GB gave them an opening. They needed to win out and it was easily doable. But they look ragged? Always in desperation mode lately?

Oh well. They lost on a 50 yd bomb when ball bounced off a helmet into lucky falling WR at SF. GB had SF beat also and messed it up.

Lions didn't kick a FG in that SF game and barely missed the 4th down pass. It was heartbroken. Cambell said, we may never get back. Deeply sighing.

To me it looks like they are trying to do the exact same things they did last year only this year it's not working out. I wonder what has changed?
