Lions Rudely Ejected From Playoffs!

Also PITT got a miracle TD while laying on the ground caught a pass on handed when th DET guy was not paying attention (or injured?). Then quietly got up and ran it in.

I saw that. Gainwell was on his back, caught the ball with his arm under it, rolled to his feet, was never touched, then ran it in as two Detroit defenders stood nearby thinking the play was dead. It was such a hairy catch I think they originally ruled it an incomplete catch.

If you can't run a route in the end zone because a DB will hunt your path and veer into you?

That DB was already 5 yds late behind who he was covering. He could not get catch up. So he did not try to get around. One could argue he was out of the play and caused the collision to draw a foul (hindsight).

There was offensive interference as the receiver pushed the defensive back off him by about 3 feet. It didn’t matter what happened after that on the reception and fumble and TD the Steelers accepted the penalty for the years.
One of the most bone-headed things I've ever seen a football player do.

The refs rescinded a Pittsburgh TD just because a Lion's defender ran face first into one of the Steeler's TE's who was there as a possible target and did not even see him coming nor have any role in the guy running into him, yet they called OPI on Pittsburgh and negated a TD, just because a Steeler accidentally got in his way (the Lions guy literally ran into him).

Crazy.

//* I already said that maybe twice above on the second foul. It was over. Somev don't read whole threads always, understood.

I saw a few "Experts" on TV today agree with me on the first one. *//

coach Rex Ryan, who previously coached the Jets, strongly criticized the referees for the two offensive pass interference penalties that negated potential touchdowns for the Lions in their Week 16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ryan stated the penalty on rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa was "dead-ass wrong" and an "awful call" that cost the Lions a win and likely a playoff spot.

//* I could go on and on...but games on. On mute. Sometimes I'm very wrong, I don't hear who or what.

I said Lions deserved to lose. Giving up two 4th qtr end runs '"untouched" for a TD? In a must win game?

The PITT TD while laying on the ground? Great play be PITT. All game they did not quit. DET seems way off *//
1. Maybe Rex should read the rule because he apparently hasnt

2. They had already made a similar call against Pittsburgh which negated a Metcalf TD. Maybe Rex should watch the whole game

I couldnt find a video of the call against Pitt but this guy talks about it and breaks both plays down

If you watch that play he was actually being dragged while h holding on to Metcalfs shirt.

I miss a lot. Reading here. And on mute. I see Brock Purdy carving up the Colts right ow. Couch doesn't rate him highly. I think? Lol!

He was only one of a few calling it bad.

All the announcers and others rush to say good call. Its maddening.

One week Collinsworth(and you) said never a worse call on interference or something. The second guy flopped so much i thought they were going to bring out a cart for him. Please.

I watched a lot of redzone, many TD plays. They don't consistently call things. Then you bring out a rule book. Lol!
Flailing his arms straight up. Oh, I may fall.

Got it. They never mess up. Even holding or on the silly tush push.

Looks like football. PITT got caught playing the wrong defense one could say? It's a small area. The DB was over by the goal post and out of the play to be able to cover the corner route? Do we have to roll over and change the play so they can cover us better?

So I just want to be clear here. You think that WR's should be/are allowed to run into DB's and just push off? Thanks for letting me know you've never played any type of organized football.

Nice spin. We were discussing the first one. And the WR or DB push off on many plays but not called.

A lot of people were hoping and expecting a big Lions comeback this year but they're not going to see it. They have been eliminated from the Playoffs. Mind you, they still have a mathematical chance but the chances of Green Bay losing both final games (including one to disheveled Baltimore) is virtually ZERO. But not only was the Lions eliminated tonight, but in one of the wildest finishes in history. A game no one will soon forget.
  • The first half was uneventful with Pittsburgh leading, but it was mainly a low scoring defensive game.

  • Pittsburgh came out for the 2nd half and it was lights out Steelers. The Lions only had the ball for three plays in the 3rd quarter for -3 yards offense.

  • The entire game happened in the 4th quarter.
    • First, Pittsburgh kicked a FG for three points. This is the best kicker in the NFL. He is nearly automatic at 60 yards. All he had to do was kick an easy 37 yard FG to put the game out of Lion's reach, but instead, he hit the upright for no points.
    • Then Pittsburgh missed innumerable interception opportunities. One Pittsburgh player was hit three times in the numbers for an interception and DROPPED ALL THREE. This missed FG kept Lions in the game.
    • With only a few seconds left on the clock, Detroit tries to get a TD to finish the game, but the receiver was STOPPED at the one foot line for an incompletion, but then, Goff picked up the ball and ran it in for a TD WINNING THE GAME FOR THE LIONS.
Yet the Lions still lost. It took four refs 5 minutes and with consultation with NY to figure it out. Apparently there was some new, obscure rule involved. The pass was ruled incomplete, but it is unclear who or when the play was ruled dead, but they finally decided that Goff did in fact pick up the ball and run it back for a TD. But it did not count. Why?

If I understand it right, the clock had run out by the time Goff ran it in for a TD plus Goff was guilty of OPI, not sure why, and because the clock had run out, you cannot advance the score after the clock hits zero and they could not assign the penalty for OPI because the clock had run out (there was more to it), but the conclusion was that the Lions were stopped on the one foot line and they're winning TD was nullified by a penalty plus the clock running out, so because of that, game over, Pittsburgh win by 29-24 and the Lions are eliminated. They have two hard games left to play, their division opponents have easy games they'd have to lose, and the rest of Pittsburgh's games are easy:
  • The Browns, which Pittsburgh better demolish.
  • The Ravens, which are battered and Jackson is in bad shape.
Detroit is effectively eliminated and Pittsburgh will likely finish 11-6, worst case: 10-7.

Michigander here. We know the Lions are cursed.

Ticky tacky BS to decide games?

The other (first) questionable call even worse as the DB was out of the play looking to get bailed out on a foul.

Why didn't DET just run it in and not get so fancy they say now. I had thought that too. Tough decision.

Clock issues? PITT is hard to run on?

DET is still listed "alive". I guess GB has to lose both and DET win both?

So you think WR's are/should be allowed to just run into DB's down the field blocking them on pass plays? My first statement stands then.

Holding could be called on every play but isn't. That doesn't mean holding isn't "illegal". The refs had already established that they were going to call this play a penalty when they negated a Steeler's TD earlier in the game. If you run pick plays down on the goal line you run the risk of getting this penalty called on the play, especially if you run them the way the Lions did on that play. Will that vary from game to game? Probably, but you can't be mad when it's called because you are intentionally committing a foul, you know when you craft the play that it's on the board that it will be called.

Should the Steelers be mad that they called DPI on 4 and 2, 2 or 3 plays earlier during the same drive? If they had "let them play" and the penalty is not called would have ended the game. Should they be mad when they called tripping the play after that? That's 30 yards the Lions picked up. Should they be mad that the OPI that was called which negated the DK Metcalf TD and they had to settle for a FG early in the 4th quarter?

I just wondering when the "let them play" time starts because there were less than 2 minutes left in the game at that point.

Because they hadn't been able to run the ball all day. They had 15 total yards rushing for the game.

Boy, the Colts sure have fallen through the floor. At one time considered the strongest team in the NFL earlier this season with a 98% probability of going to the playoffs, it was down to 5% at game time, even with then taking on Phil Rivers.

I’ve said he’s over paid and I still think that’s accurate. Shanahans offense is exceedingly QB friendly. Mac Jones played as well as Purdy until he was injured.

Rivers was supposed to bolster their PO chances? He’s been out of the league for almost a decade.

And their entire secondary is injured
