Real Libertarians have the same agenda as the Tea Party. There is no way in the world that a Libertarian can win a presidential election so old time libertarians have done the right thing and joined the Tea Party which puts pressure on the Republican party to run conservative candidates. The problem is that the Libertarian movement has been taken over for the most part by the pot heads, druggies, dirty tricks democrats and no government tin foil hats.

The surest sign of somebody who knows nothing about libertarians is when they start talking about "real libertarians." Libertarians have nowhere near the same agenda as the Tea Party, as libertarians are opposed to the aggression inherent in the state not simply that of the Obama administration.

The tea party does want to cut taxes and spending, so there is an overlap. But your point on the difference is perfectly stated. The tea party wants the same government, just less of it. Libertarians are far more radical than that.

First, according to the PRRI poll, libertarians represent only 12% of the Republican Party. This number is consistent with the findings of other studies by the Pew Research Center and the American National Election Study. This libertarian constituency is dwarfed by other key Republican groups, including white evangelicals (37%) and those who identify with the Tea Party (20%).

Is the GOP going to be so split that they will cede elections to Dems?

All libertarians aren't the same. They can't even organize within their own ranks.

On one hand, you have consequentialist/utilitarian libertarians. These are the types that believe in naturalizing illegal immigrants because they do those dirty jobs nobody wants to do.

On the other hand, you have natural rights/deontological libertarians. These are the types that believe in strictly monitoring the border and deporting illegal immigrants in the name of due process.

Even within the GOP, both of these groups struggle to rally support because of how the other side thinks.

The consequentialist/utilitarian group struggles to get support from those who believe grace comes before law. They come off as coldhearted, calculating, and inhumane from excessive pragmatism.

The natural rights/deontological libertarian group struggles to get support from those who believe practice comes before principle. They come off as naive, weak, and taking security for granted by being excessively tolerant.

Bush spent a lot of money because of 9-11 forced our hand to send the US military all over the middle east, Asia and Africa to root out the Islamic nuts that Clinton ignored.

The truth is I'm not sure that anybody could have beaten Obama. We know that Ron Paul did the best among independents head to head with Obama in 2012, but would that have been enough to sway the election? Purely speculation at this point.
