Fwiw....I'm a contractor who's been riding the 'green wave' for quite some time, so i could easily sit on either side of the entire debate......but.....

The problem isn't whether or not we upgrade our homes. The problem is making it mandatory.

How energy efficient my how is is my decision as long as I'm paying for the power and the efficiency.

Isn't the concept of one paying for one's use , or abuse of energy is the heart of the carbon tax ?

I do energy star stuff when the price differential isn't too unrealistic for me ever recovering it over the life of the product. I will never buy a HE washer if there is a cheaper choice, for instance, because water is very cheap in our area so you don't save much and I have had too many people tell me they absolutely hated theirs. Really the greenest thing you can do is make do with what you already have as long as possible as the damage is already done to the environment as far as things about your house. Buy an existing home instead of a new one, etc etc.
