What is weird, that it's not playing politics, it's not a contrived made up issue.
This is a corrupt politician getting caught with her hoof in the cookie jar.
It, her, they, furry, pig knowingly and willingly committed fraud. I have no idea
if the statute of limitations is in play or not, but this should be a career ender for her.

You can legally claim one house as a primary residence, and a week later decide to move.
You do NOT get a tax break on a primary residence, and you DO get huge tax breaks on rentals.
For example, you can write off depreciation, taxes, utilities, and repairs on rentals, but not on your residence.

You have it backwards. Mortgage interest on a primary residence is tax deductible. It's not for a rental. Mortgage interest is usually by far the biggest real estate related tax deduction most people get.

The forms are badly worded, and when you jointly buy a property, it is usually a spouse, so the wording can use the word spouse when they actually mean co-owner.
There is nothing gained by using a spouse.
There is no fraud involved because it changed nothing and harmed no one.
It is the bank who would be the only one concerned, since they give different rates depending on things like owner occupied vs commercial rental.
No one else cares.

Mortgage interest is always tax deductible, residence or rental.
That is because the banks pay tax on the interest and it would be double taxing if the mortgage holder could not deduct it.
And no, mortgage interest is fairly small part of your payment, so not a huge deduction.
Depreciation is a much larger amount, since you get to write off 1/25th of the property value every year. If the property is worth $250k, then you get to write off $10k/year. So buying rentals totally wiped out my taxes and saved me millions over time. The only trick is that depreciation has to be repaid when you sell.

Since there is nothing wrong or harmful to others for a daughter to buy a property with her father, there could not be any law broken.

I was in the business for 44 years. When you fill out and sign a loan app the form asks if you are the sole or joint purchaser. It then asks you to identify the relationship if joint. It’s easy as pie

That is one the dumbest, most uninformed posts I've ever read anywhere.
 
Unacceptable form of bookkeeping. Incorrect(unacceptable) classification of expenses.
Testimony showed the bookkeeping error on expenses was to cover up, campaign finance regs/laws broken! Several politicians in NYS have been charged under the same statute previous to Trump.
