I think both people should consider unprotected sex a bad idea in general.

And yes, birth control would help. But it is not always effective. My first wife and I were talking about having a baby, and discussing when she should stop taking The Pill. Before she could do that we found out she was pregnant with our first child. Then we planned our second child. After he was born, we used the Sponge. Supposedly very effective. That is where our daughter came in to the picture. Then we had her tubes tied.

Birth control isn’t 100% effective, for example condoms can be defective or sometimes pregnancy occurs despite use of the pill or other forms of contraception. It isn’t up to anyone but the woman and her doctor to determine what needs to be done, not the government or busybody moralists.
