Of course 5,000 prisoners were released. That was part of the withdrawal deal worked out with the Taliban leaders. That along with the Taliban releasing 1,000 of their prisoners as well. The release of prisoners paved the way for the beginning of peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

Even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the agreement was “an important initial step,” but that much more work must be done to achieve peace.
