The fear was mutual where each saw the others as the dangerous threat to subdue.

Kyle did not try to subdue anybody. Kyle was running away from them. Grosskreutz did not see Kyle shoot anybody. He accosted Kyle and when Kyle said he going to the police and started running towards the police to report what happened. That's when GG flipped out, pulled a concealed Glock that he was illegally carrying, and started chasing Kyle.

Obviously GG was a criminal who's only fear that was that Kyle was going to report his fellow criminals to the police.

Kyle was the only one who had any legitimate reason to fear for his life. The only fear the criminals could have possibly had was that Kyle, a witness, was going to report their crimes to the police.

If GG was afraid of Kyle, why would he be chasing him instead of trying to get away from him?
