That's what I love about baseball.....the tons of stats.

Watching the new Yankee, Clay Holmes.
Been excellent since the Yankees picked him up.

I wasn't impressed with him when the Yanks got him, pretty much a lifetime over 5 ERA.

I don't know if Pittsburgh is a terrible fielding team, but.....

.....there is a stat called FIP....

Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP)

Definition

FIP is similar to ERA, but it focuses solely on the events a pitcher has the most control over -- strikeouts, unintentional walks, hit-by-pitches and home runs. It entirely removes results on balls hit into the field of play.

For example: If a pitcher has surrendered a high average on balls in play, his FIP will likely be lower than his ERA. Balls in play are not part of the FIP equation because a pitcher is believed to have limited control over their outcome.

The formula

Where the "FIP constant" puts FIP onto the same scale as the entire league's ERA: ((HR x 13) + (3 x (BB + HBP)) - (2 x K)) / IP + FIP constant."

And his FIP is way better that that ERA would lead one to believe.

Curling, a winter Olympics sport.

You're missing out on a lot in life.

Of course I'm not.

Get back to me when you've read any of the several books on the Munich Olympics.

I'm currently reading...

I know all about the 1972 Munich summer Olympics, I was in Nam and The Stars and Stripes covered it.

I will never watch the Olympics.
It is a considered and calculated view.

Do as you wish.

One of the fun things about baseball scouting is that not every important trait is commonly measured...though they try to look at everything now.

Every once in a while someone discovers a statistical analysis that reveals the potential for higher level performance than expected. This was the essence of the "money ball" thing, eh? Now everybody focuses on OPS, a statistic that makes absolutely no sense.
