I don't really buy that.

I don't really see how anyone at THAT LATE DATE could have put together a more credible case than Harris did.

I also don't see how anyone had a better claim to leading the party than the sitting vice president. If Biden had died instead of just stepped aside, there would have been no question about Harris getting the nod.

And that was the problem. Regardless of ideology, the voters are punishing incumbent parties for inflation and a general post-Covid funk. In the UK, it meant that the Tories got thrown out on their asses. In Japan, the LDP took a thumping (Even though the party is called the "Liberal Democratic Party", it's actually the conservative party in Japan.)

That said, I do think that if Biden had stepped down last year after the midterms (where he could have claimed a moral victory in preventing a red wave) and let the process play out in the primaries, whoever the Democratic nominee was would have been in a much stronger position.

By barely campaigning before he dropped out, Biden kind of let Trump run the table.

Republicans own the next four years regardless of whether they are responsible or not. For good or bad.
