The Italian in charge of the trial, conviction and execution of Jesus was Pontius Pilate. He tried to give the Jewish leaders a way to save him. They chose to save Barabas instead.
And when Jesus was crucified, Pilate had a sign nailed above his head that said "King of the Jews". The Jews objected and wanted it change to "He claimed he was King of the Jews". Pilate said "What I have written stays written".
Pontius Pilate tried to wash his hands of the whole matter, but the Jews would not have it. The Jews were responsible for the crucification of Jesus. But then, the act of him being executed and then rising from the dead was what allowed them all to be forgiven for their sins. So, while it was brutal, it was a good thing and a fulfillment of the prophesy.
