It seems so long ago, I had almost forgotten.

Find me a reference when he said he'd do that on day one. Obama was forced to broker a tax deal in Congress and agreed to a Republican demand to continue the Bush tax cuts until 2012 in exchange for taxes laid out in his 2009 stimulus plan and an extension of unemployment benefits for another year.

Proving what I already said. He was not unilaterally able to enact his agenda but rather was constantly obstructed by R's.
My apologies, he said he’d let them expire, which he did not do. Again, if you can’t do it, don’t promise it.

As is his want, he spoke about human dignity, mutual respect, the democratic ideals that bind us, and the values we share as Americans. In so doing I was reminded of what this country was and aspired to be. Something from which we are on what I hope is only a brief hiatus, but worry we are not. What a contrast from our current situation.

Unfortunately, it also brought back memories of how much he was loathed. And in some circles still is. Despite the impeccably civil, ethical, contemplative, mature, forward thinking nature of his presidency. We sure could use some of that right now.

I see Obama as a very good president that was faced with a strong recession (caused by Bush Jr) and a Senate and House that were full of racist people that worked against Obama every step of the way, simply because of his skin color.

I first became aware of politics and of our presidents, back in the late 50's when I was a teenager. There have been 11 presidents after JFK, Among those 12 presidents, JFK was my #1 and Obama was my #2. Dropping off from there, I see Bush Sr, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton as the other 3 that were a positive.

Lyndon B, Johnson, Ford, and Biden were non-events

And Carter, Nixon and Bush Jr. were disasters and I now put Trump in this category as well.

By the way, presidential historians agree with me mostly, meaning I am not the only one that thinks like this!

If you like you doctor you can keep him? How about if you like your insurance you can keep it?
He was wrong to have made that promise. As he explained, what he meant was the government would not force people to change doctors or plans. But it's true by virtue of the ACA coverage mandates some insurers chose to cancel plans.

Actually Biden’s first three years were very good. Especially considering the circumstances

and that happened pretty rarely

It was a Democratic Senate and Obama failed in 90-6 vote. Why do you make a promise you can’t keep, he lied about him closing Gitmo.
I have to ask, do you hold trump to the same standard you hold Obama to?

In his 2008 run for the White House, Barack Obama promised to shut down the prison for suspected foreign terrorists opened by President George W. Bush at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

On his second full day in the White House, President Obama issued an executive order to close Guantanamo within a year.

Eight years later, that has not happened. Mr. Obama's ambition was largely thwarted by congressional restrictions, but also by the difficulty in reducing the 242 prisoners he inherited to zero. Today, 55 remain, including five accused of organizing the September 11th attacks on America.

So he should have said, "I will do these things unless congressional Repub's obstruct my agenda."

I have said this over and over and over again, Trump is a subpar president, he makes promises he can’t possibly keep, he is abrasive, he spends way too much and has increased debt, his BBB is just a bunch of tax cuts and overspending, he has totally mis managed Musk’s department, it is a great idea, but has been wasted because the savings aren’t happening, he has us in a pointless war and has now made it even more pointless as he should have followed through with getting regime change there. I like the tariffs but he waffles way too much on them. I am a fiscal conservative so many of his ideas, I like his execution is terrible. I couldn’t vote for a Trump.

I don’t think he is as bad as the left makes him out to be, I tend to believe like Fetterman, Mahar and Stephen A Smith are pretty spot on and reasonable on their assessments.

So he should have said, "I will do these things unless congressional Repub's obstruct my agenda."
Why do you make promises you can’t possibly keep? I owned a business, I have been a GM, second in command and I would never make a promise I couldn’t keep. If put on the spot, I would give an honest appraisal.

Do you always make promises you can’t keep?

So he should have said, "I will do these things unless congressional Repub's obstruct my agenda."
Which is exactly what he said. He should have known they would do that, instead of wasting 8 years trying to work with them.

I've done a fair amount of reading about Reagan's presidency. "Sleepwalking Through History" by Haynes Johnson is my favorite. Reagan's hyped up legacy doesn't match his record.

One of the things he doesn't get credit for is the genuine attempt at cooperation he made, trying to get Repub's to negotiate compromises on major issues for the sake of progress. They stonewalled him instead.

Which they did on day one of his presidency, when they shit on their own healthcare idea just to spite the brown guy who ate their lunch, since their racist base was so pissed off they got drummed by a brown guy. .

He should have read the room on day one.

It was a start and a compromise.
Try thinking in context of @250 years ago.*
Besides, the 'breeding like cattle' had been ongoing for centuries.

Maybe a refresher on history would also help.

You also overlook that most other colonies in the Americas were still importing.
Slavery had been an institution in human civilization for all of human history. Few civilizations had a more brutal form of Chattel slavery than what developed in the South, especially after the slave trade ended.
