Some movie remakes suck ass. Red Dawn springs to mind.

Then there are originals which were so good, it feels sacrilegious to remake them. This was my opinion when they remade True Grit and when they remade Ben Hur.

I was wrong about True Grit. The remake is very good.

Ben Hur, they should burn in hell.

I think the best remake I have ever seen is John Carpenter's The Thing with Kurt Russel. The original Thing looked like a mutant carrot.

Which remakes did you like best?

Lolita (1997), directed by Adrian Lyne

Partly because the Kubrick predecessor was so...erratic, I suppose. Kubrick was headstrong, always had to leave his mark on things, never felt a need to be faithful to the original novel or whatnot. But, the Lyne version is faithful to the novel and IAC is pretty excellent.

The Maltese Falcon

Yes indeed, it is a remake...it was first made in 1931, and no, I have not seen the earlier version, and don't need to see it, because, as The Fat Man said, there's only one Maltese Falcon....

His Girl Friday

Kind of a no-brainer. Vastly superior to The Front Page (1931).
