Everyone understood that as long as Iran was allowed to enrich uranium, it had a viable nuclear threat to be raised against anyone that objected to the many wars Iran organized and funded in the ME, and everyone also understood that the fanatical ayatollahs would never give up this threat: it had to be taken from them.

The natural progression of efforts to end Iran's nuclear weapons threat was first negotiations, then economic pressure and finally military power, but successive US presidents persuaded Iran the US would not use military actions to end Iran's nuclear threat.

Trump was on the right track in his first term. He offered to renegotiate Obama's agreement, and Iran refused, so he applied economic pressure, and Iran became more defiant, and when he threatened military action, Iran did not take him seriously, so now Israel, with US support, is there to destroy Iran's ability to project any kind of power beyond its own borders.
