I dont

a cult is a splinter group

but the Catholic is the biggest Christian group there is! 👍
Christianity, like every religion, began as a cult under a charismatic leader, but no longer is by my definition of cult:
  • You join a cult, you are born into a church

I would say, no, the Catholic Church isn't a cult in that its members are allowed to criticize church dogma and doctrine and set their own level of participation.

The Catholic Church is corrupt, evil, and completely out of touch with the 21st Century, but it isn't a cult

mostly true ... but it can also be the other way round
It can but I think the number of people who change their church affiliation is pretty rare and generally due to things like intermarriage.

some of their members sure act like they are in one....

The Catholic Church has people of power and influence within its ranks who formed middle circles of their own and use the church according to their own personal agenda.

This is partly why Freemasonry gets such a bad rep. Overall the organization is not a malevolent secret society, but there are circles of people within it who use it for power and gain.

Pyramidic church structures are perfect for people in the upper levels of the hierarchy to conceal their true purpose and intent from the layman.

cult or no cult ..... that is the question

cult or no cult ..... that is the question
Being that the Catholic Church is so huge and widespread, I don't believe the answer can be so black & white. If a global organization is corrupted badly in some places but not others, can the entire entire group be called a cult? In another context, I might argue that all organized religions are essentially cults and DO seek to attract new members and convert them.... although the question still remains if they are benevolent or malevolent or both. A.cult could be either.

I voted "don't know" partly because the very context of the word "cult" is being debated here and I think that some people might misinterpret the opinions of others or vote with ignorance based on the stigma of the word.

Technically all religions are cults. The word cult has only recently taken on a negative connotation.

Does that apply to Jewish people as well?

That's not what mass hysteria is, unless you think that children around the world believing in Santa Clause is an example of it.

It is not.

Mass hysteria is local, as with the Salem Witch Trials or the Tanganyika Laughing Epidemic.
