I think the best way to look at this is in terms of coalitions.
On the one hand you have the illiberal autocratic and semi-autocratic group. I comsider the Maga movement, Orban and Putin on that side. Ideologocally ultra- nationalist, anti-gay, anti-trans, and anti-immigration.
On the other side, the traditional liberal Democrats, represented by the Democrats amd the EU. The globalist, more inclusive group.
Orban has been at odds with that group for years. The problem he has is in my opinion the same as any populist has. When it comes down to it, the present easy solutions to difficult problems. The trouble with that, is that the solutions seldom work, and most of the time create other more serious problems.
In this case, it's one thing to buck the EU, and lean into culture wars, but quite another when Europe starts withholding funds because of those policies. Since your population will start to feel the effects of that.
Now, you can do what Orban did and change the constitution and try to keep power that way, but unless you go fully autocratic and actually hold sham elections discontent if sufficiently great will catch up with you.
The discontent here caused not just an electoral win, but a landslide electoral win for the opposition. A win so devestating it's pretty clear that the outcome wasn't in doubt. Vamce or no Vance, Trump or no Trump.
Having said that, Trump isn't very popular in Europe to say the least, so I don't think it helped.
