according to the numbers so far it is NOT a serious health risk for MOST people...

however it is deadly to about 3% of the population.

How about those young doctor's in China that died and a 38 year old marathon runner in Italy? Once the count of active cases in U.S. hit 5000 or the hospital's are all filled and people dying at home then we will re visit the age groups.

Quarantining those at most risk would be nearly impossible because those at most risk are those with compromised immune system, about 40 million Americans, half of which are over 65. Secondly, people with compromised immune systems maybe the one's in most danger of dying if they contract the virus but they are also the one's least likely to spread the disease because they are much less active than healthier people.

Epidemiologist have been studying quarantining for many years to develop the best and most practical methods. They have determined there is no best method because it depends on the society, government capabilities, the disease, and how fast it's spreading. IMHO, we are doing exactly what we should be doing, asking for voluntary quarantining except in areas where there are a number of known cases.

There is no doubt that there is an overreaction because without knowing how prevalent the disease is in a community, businesses and public officials are being overly cautious. Once the test kits are available throughout country and anyone can really get at test, we will see a lot of this overreaction disappear.

IMHO, screening visitors to nursing homes would help. The degree of screening could be determined by the presence of the disease in each community.

You do not have to be ill to the spread virus. If you are infected, you can spread it through a cough, sneeze or even a touch.

If the testing was actually available to everyone as Trump said, most of the overreaction would disappear and the news media would have less to report. Public officials are closing schools, organizations are cancelling meeting and conventions, and businesses are having workers work at home. This is of course an overreaction in most communities. Once testing is available to everyone which Trump has claimed is available, people will know how prevalent the disease is in their community and can take actions based facts and not fear.

You do not have to be ill to the spread virus. If you are infected, you can spread it through a cough, sneeze or even a touch.

If that is true, why did China have to build entire additional hospitals to care for the sick in Wuhan?
Do you hear about a lot of folks with the "ordinary" flu needing to be hospitalized? Not so much.
It seems a lot of people got a lot sicker than the "ordinary flu" in China. Why? I don't know, but neither does anyone else and that same flu has crept its way into many of our states. So don't dismiss it as a nothing burger, either.

Ok, there's like 320 million people in America.

Experts say 40-70 percent will.vet the virus. Call it 55%, right in the middle. That's 176 million cases.

So far, it's seem like somewhere between 10 & 20% are serious and require some sort of intervention. We'll go with the median and call it 15%. That's 26,400,000 seriously ill people. You think we have anything approaching the beds and staff needed for that?

And even if we keep the death toll at 1% that's 1,760,000 deaths.
