Most acorns never become trees. An oak tree will drop hundreds of acorns. Most of them are gathered up by squirrels and other animals as food, others are trampled underfoot, a very few become saplings, but most of those never grow to be trees.

As for fetuses... two-thirds of fertilized zygotes never attach to the uterine wall. At least 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. (Probably more). And about half end up in abortions because at the end of the day, it's the woman's choice.

Now, you'll write off miscarriages as "God's Will," which is just the religious asshole's method of explaining the capricious nature of the universe. (There is no God, and shit just happens.)

I'm happy to say we've superseded God with Science. We've reduced the infant mortality rate from 50% to less than 1% in even the poorest countries. We allow women to give birth without pain through medicine. Maternal death is rare today.

But, wait... the Bible says that childbirth has to be painful because Eve listened to the talking snake and ate fruit from the tree! How dare we ignore God?

So the reality is, we have abortion to simply compensate for the fact we've eliminated child mortality. God doesn't choose anymore, we do.

I have an aunt who died as an infant in 1944. Not sure why my grandmother was still making a baby at 44 years old, but she was.

Except- again- most fetuses/zygotes don't become babies. A lot of women in my family have had miscarriages... they don't treat it the way they would have treated losing an actual baby. (something that hasn't happened in my family since the 1940's.)
