California Democrats on an Assembly committee blocked two bills Tuesday that would have banned transgender athletes from girls’ sports, locker rooms, bathrooms and dorms, after an emotional three-hour hearing that underscored the political divide in both the country and state.

Assembly Bill 89 would have required the California Interscholastic Federation to change its policies and prohibit an athlete who was male at birth from participating in a girls’ interscholastic sports team. Assembly Bill 844 would have changed state law to require college and K-12 students who play sports to play on the teams and use the facilities that align with the sex they were assigned at birth.

They trapped themselves in their own overblown rhetoric. A miniscule percentage of the population really is trans. They are born with birth defects, which can be partially, slowly, painfully, and very expensively corrected now with surgery and pills, with a risk of organ damage from the lifetime medication of synthetic hormones. That's a hard life. Democrats may have gone overboard in trying to help trans people. By claiming all trans women are women, without precise legal distinctions and requirements, they left the lawsuit door wide open. Men who wanted to play women's sports, go to women's prison, etc., could just threaten lawsuits and they were in. Schools bullied female students into acceptance because they saw less of a lawsuit threat there.

I say "may have" because another possibility is they are using trans people to punish gays for achieving gay marriage legalization on their own instead of letting Democrats use that as a campaign issue while never doing anything to achieve legalization. If that is the strategy, it is backfiring.
