Is A Hijab A Symbol Of Misogyny?

The apologists echo the fundamentalists when they call the hijab a "symbol of modesty", when in fact it's a symbol of the oppression and submission of Muslim women.

We all know what status women hold in the fundamentalist form of the religion, and these people continue to align themselves with the fundamentalists.

These people are not liberals.
.

People claim it is a "choice", yet it isn't a real choice at all when punishment for making the wrong choice is so ingrained and widespread.

If you go to a doughnut shop, you can choose between an old fashioned, a cruller, a frosted or many other types. If you had acid thrown in your face for choosing any but one, specific doughnut, you would have a "choice" after a fashion, but it would not be a true choice because it was coerced through the use of punishment.

When Muslim women say it is their "choice" that is only because it prevents harassment from Muslim men as well women within the family. It is an entire system that must be addressed, here. In the 1800s, those who wished to conserve slavery argued that many house slaves were content with their lot in life as the reason to continue the system and used their claims in EXACTLY the same way that those who wish to conserve Islamic gender slavery do today. They claim that just because SOME women have been conditioned to accept their lot in life that it must be true for ALL.

I just remain amazed at how many people in this country are willing to apologize and spin and deflect for this.

I know how powerful ideology can be, but this is just on another level. It doesn't get any more illiberal than this.

Why must Muslim women constantly wear head coverings? I read it is because the woman is obeying and submitting to Allah. Remember, Islam is ruled by males.
If it’s as a fashion accessory, wearing a hijab is fine to me as with any piece of clothing. If it’s because of fear of magical retribution, as with any other religious gear worn for that reason, then it’s incredibly silly. If it’s out of fear that men will punish you, then it’s misogyny and abuse.

The specifics of female covering in Islam isn't Koranic, which only invokes women to be modest, as many religions do. How much of a woman is covered depends on the local culture. They range from a simple headscarf to a full-on head-to-toe burkha. Many women, including close friends of mine, wear the hijab as a fashion statement as well as a symbol of their Islamic identity.

People who pretend that women in the US aren't making the choice, can't imagine where it isn't. No joke, when women get on the plane to fly to the US from Saudi Arabia they go to the restroom and change clothes.

It would be grand if when these conversations were initiated people had enough integrity to just say they hate Islam and call it a day.

Early Christians wore head coverings. If you are looking at the women in the US, it is a choice.
These women strongly feel that people should listen to what they are saying rather than how they look.

Most American women would not choose to wear a hijab 24/7 like muslim women are made to do. We're not talking about a fashion choice here. The fact early Christians wore head coverings is no excuse. The hijab represents a religion that believes in a theocracy which is antithetical to American separation clause and our traditions and history.

Having that in our Congress is a direct insult to all Americans whose ancestors fought for the right to not be ruled by a church-state. Would you be sanguine with a congressman who wore a tie with a swastika on it constantly? What about a KKK hood? Would you call that a 'fashion choice?'

From what you describe, it seems those women loathe Islam and can't wait to escape from their Burkas. They are probably embarrassed to wear that shit.

Its probably women are in charge of Everything by not having jobs, women's word is law. There is no higher position than housewife. That position is all-powerful over lowly clerks of government and stuff.

The hijab is a symbol of female modesty. In itself it isn't evidence of misogyny. Men dictating to women (outside work requirements) what they must (not) wear, is.

it is my sublime opinion that TODAY IN THE USA, muslim women use the HIJAB as a
political statement. In fact the bug--Linda
Sarsour, has so admitted-----she wears her
idiot costumes to make herself look
DISTINCTIVE -----as opposed to "just
another white girl from Brooklyn" for the record-----I am "just another white girl from Brooklyn"--------UTTERLY DULL with no ambition to BEDECK myself in exciting
costumes

They do.

Now we are getting to what this is really about. That's where you should have started.

So, what if she wears the hijab to make a political statement? So, what if she wears what she wears to distinguish herself from others? So, what if you couldn't care less about any of it? It's her choice to make, just as it is yours. Ain't life grand?

Now, if only the bigots and misogynists on all sides were to shut the eff up, finally, cease their spluttering apoplexy, and leave her alone.

Agreed and the 'local culture' in Islam States is not the American culture. In America women are free to wear whatever they want and MOST do NOT wear hijabs. Why can't a Muslim woman take off her hijab in public? Women love their hair in the Western culture. What kind of mind control do Muslim men have over Muslim women?
If American women are free to wear what they want, why can’t they wear a hijab :dunno:

Maybe you should talk to some Muslim women and ask them why they wear a hijab instead of presuming to speak for them :dunno:

Americans are not about to cover up hair.

A group of women in Egypt.I wouldn’t just assume they have no choices across the Muslim world either. It depends not just on the country but on what part of the country. Rural areas and villages are far more conservative (regressive) than urban areas. You find the same things among Hindu women in India. They cover their heads. People sure seem scared of a woman’s hair....

Modest clothing is not like a hood...so....no. A hijab is more like a hood.

Would you be OK with a man wearing a tie with a swastika on it in congress?
