How is any of that the business of the US?

You might recall there was an earlier war with Iraq, 1990-1991, over their invasion of Kuwait.
That war never ended. There was no Peace Treaty signed with Iraq.
Only an Armistice, with terms. Iraq was not complying with those terms.

I had a list nearly a dozen reasons long, since misplaced in my files and the website it was on has ceased to exist. So this is a rough recall, and partial at the moment.

1) Back to Armistice, but no Peace Treaty.
As mentioned, that means technically the first war never ended, was only on hold.
This is similar to the situation with North Korea where there is no Peace Treaty for the war of 1950-1953 which they started. Only a cease-fire~armistice. Which means that war could re-start at any moment. Hence the heavy deployment of troops on the border/DMZ by the USA and South Korea. This has been an unwanted expense and threat prevention focus for the USA, shouldn't be necessary. Especially if North Korea would cease it's hostile posture.

The USA was very reluctant to have another such unwanted tension and terms with another hostile nation, requiring unwanted deployment of USA military to guard and enforce terms like already exists with N. Korea. Not to mention the unwanted expense.
Ideally would see Iraq come to the table and sign a peace treaty.

2) One term of the Armistice was the No-Fly Zones on the borders with Iraq. Iraq was constantly targeting our patrols with their anti-aircraft weapons systems and provocative flights testing boundaries and resolve. There was increasing danger of such activity causing an incident that might renew the war.

3) Miss-use of "Oil for Food" fund$. Saddam/Iraq was diverting these funds towards increased weapons procurement which they were not supposed to be doing.

4) Violations of terms restricting increasing weapons procurement. See 3) above.

5) Iraq's efforts to destabilize and disrupt the use of the US Dollar in petroleum and other international trade arrangements.

6) Support for Islamic "terrorism" such as refugee to terrorists seeking to escape prosecution in the West and reward payments to terrorists and family survivors of slain terrorists.

7) Indications that an alleged anti-hijack/anti-terrorist training facility might also being used for training in doing terrorist attacks.

8) Obstructing and resisting certain WMD inspectors/inspections adding suspicion that they were trying to hide WMDs.

9) Active program of genocide against the 'Marsh Arabs' in Southern Iraq. A humanitarian concern.

10) Suspicious shipments from suspected WMD sites out of the country, mostly into Syria.

11) As mentioned in a previous post the environmental/ecological WMD of cutting water flow to the Southern Marshes. Injuring fisheries and migratory birds of the region.

That's a rough basic list as best I can recall two decades later.
Some were "official" and mentioned, others weren't but implied.
