OK I just learned this

On Windows right click the screen
then new folder
then Alt 255 this makes a folder with no name

Right click the folder

Properties
Customize
change folder icon

On the bottom line of the icons after the padlock icon there is a blank

Select the blank and hit OK

You now have an invisible folder on your desktop

Just make sure you remember where it is

Why though? :dunno:

I bet it's still seen through Explorer.

I'm using Windows 11 and had to restart Windows before it happened. But then I still got this black square.

Maybe you didn't pick the right icon then

I have Widows 11 and it worked for me

But I also have a wallpaper maybe that's the difference too

That's ok, I just changed the desktop background to solid black. :laughing0301:

If that's your thing.

I was thinking more like bank statements or maybe a place for the bad poetry I write that I don't want people reading
I use a dedicated encrypted drive for that.

Respect mah Securitah! :D

Now go to Explorer and look at your desktop that way. I bet you see it.

I need a new Windows install, current one's all gunked up, trial period's expired on half the stuff I like to use,

and it's just not as crisp as it used to be..

I mighta messed up a couple minor things, too.

which windows version ?

This has been available since Windows XP.
Although, like everything else, it was much easier to do in XP
You just right clicked, properties, and click 'Hidden"

Wait... you can still do that. So do the above.
Just remember - you will not see it unless you go into Explorer, and choose "show hidden"

You can also hide a folder without hiding its content. This way you can type the path to the folder in the explorer and the content will be shown even without "show hidden" files enabled.

Why would one want invisible folders? I have a hard enough time finding visible ones.

We used to use it all the time when I was in systems years ago. We would put systems/cleaning software etc. in it. Also log files to show user activity.
I think that is what it was primarily for.

That's because Alt+255 is an ASCII code function that signifies a 'no break, break'.
