I ran into the same problem when I was "gifted" with 4 baby ducklings who were rescued while crossing the street (with the green light) at the end of a freeway exit. I tried to find their mom but was told that she had been killed and couldn't find an agency, humane society or anyone else who could help other than a pet rescue company because they're considered wildlife. I was even scolded for removing them from the area in which they were found and was threatened about having them in my 2nd bathroom's bathtub with a warming lamp and small pool. I was VERY sick at the time, coming down with the flu, otherwise I wouldn't have even been at that particular offramp in the middle of day going home to see them crossing the street.

Two of them didn't make it because I apparently didn't know how to keep them warm enough or feed them properly but I did manage to get the remaining two to the animal rescue people a few days later after I felt well enough to drive.

I have a LOT of compassion for most living creatures and the human beings who care for them and do what they can to see that they don't suffer in any way.

But I do agree with you that what they did was completely uncalled for and as you say "evil" or in the very least callous.

Squirrels & raccoons are a part of our environment, among MANY other thigs. If I can figure out how to upload the video snippet I have a hilarious clip of how one of the raccoons reacted the first time they saw the flowers I put in a planter in my flower bed

I was told that squirrels don't generally carry rabies, that they are at very low risk for carrying/transmitting the disease.

This is sad news though, there are several pet squirrels on the internet as well as a couple in Japan who have a pair of otters that have their own internet channel (they're REALLY cute)

The fact that the authorities would waste this much time, money, and effort to terrorize a family, for over 5 hours, because of a squirrel, should enrage everyone with a sense of morality.

This case is beyond absurd, it verges on truly being evil.
