I have an older M16 myself, its an A1, capable of single shot, three round burst, or full auto fire. About the only drawback to them is the smaller caliber they fire , i mean the 5.56 round is incredibly accurate, and cheap, but for knockdown power it lacks a little something. Other than that, excellent weapon.

On the flips side. when you are carrying 75 lbs of gear PLUS your weapon in 110 degree heat, you don't want to be lugging around a bunch of heavy ass ammo. Think about the poor sap who has to lug the SAW around in that shit...

However, there was a push by Remington to get the US military to adopt their 6.8mm SPC, it was adopted by special forces, somewhat, but rejected for mainstream use. However, the Army at least , is rethinking that decision.

6.8mm is roughly a .270 round.
