I'm in a bit of a sticky wicket....

Welcome to the game, BC. Programmers keep changing code causing incompatibility problems because, well, that is how they force you to keep spending money. In actuality, there is no good reason why any of these programs cannot work with newer ones except that they don't want them to.

BTW, in order to just order groceries off of my grocer's website now take passing more security walls than to get into my bank account. I hate to say this, but the government really needs to get involved in regulating this bullshit, but keep in mind that our government still uses MSDOS to do your taxes because Congress doesn't want to spend the money to buy them newer computers.

I think you hit the nail on the head in regard to why they're doing this. I didn't know that about the government computers, haha. Thanks you all, for letting me rant. I just hope I they can recover that old Apple account. Because I have some unfinished video projects that I don't want to lose if I can't use FCP anymore. It's a long shot but maybe I can find a friend or relative who has that old number somewhere still. 😝

I think you hit the nail on the head in regard to why they're doing this.

Oh believe me, I know I have. Years ago I used to design stuff and they have a thing called Designed Obsolescence for consumers. Ever notice every year they keep coming out with new and improved operating systems, features and products? Better! Better! BETTER! What they do to the consumer is make sure you CONSUME. You can design a product to work perfect nearly forever (at a very high cost as you then bear the full developmental cost up front one time), but what they do instead is release a flawed version of it that works but with limitations, then each year, slowly release upgrades to fix (some of) the old problems but with new problems, so that you always need the fixes but never quite get the perfect product they designed that you really want.

Meanwhile, they do make perfect products for non-consumable governmental agencies (like the phone company). Certain things just gotta work.

Similar deal with these software subscriptions. Instead of selling you a product now, they just want to rent it to you. Big, big money for them. Then they got you by the balls (ahem). First they create a need, then string you along. It is all about control. Look at your life and think of all the things you now NEED in order to just live (computer, internet, cellphone, texting, et el). You only NEED all this stuff because they MAKE you need it.

If our government were really doing its job, they could fix this, but sad to say, the only way to break the cycle is to just not buy into it. Just as I no longer watch WWE wrestling on TV because they no longer show wrestling like they used to and it is now all just advertisements for the next pay event (they used to have one a year called Wrestlemania but now they have 12 a year and they just string you from one to the next to the next), I no longer subscribe to cable TV because the programming is all crap and just repeats of repeats, just as I don't buy consumer stereo equipment but instead design and build my own so to have $200,000 sound for only $8,000, just as I no longer go to live sporting events because it is all ridiculous overcharges for parking, food, and beer to watch 60 minutes of underwhelming football by a bunch of highly overpaid whiny assholes just to bait you into an annual Superbowl which is nothing but advertising and marketing. The only way to beat the man is to just not subscribe in the first place.

When enough people stop signing on to this bullshit, only then will they change. Problem is, the world is full of continually new suckers.

BTW, back in 2011, I bought a MacPro desktop. Cost me more than some of my cars but it was worth it, because it was never designed to be a CONSUMABLE item. BTW, never buy a new car neither. The only way to beat the game is to just not PLAY their game.

My advise? Buy a used Mac cheap off of a used Mac dealer with Final Cut Pro installed and get your work done. Then decide if you want to keep it or sell it to someone else. Another thought? Fuck Photoshop. Adobe is the biggest RIP in the universe. Try looking into Corel software. Way better. Never use what the "industry" uses (and everyone uses Microsoft Suite and Adobe) because that is where the biggest rip off is.

One last thing: You should run Parallels (you can't partition your drive using it though). I emulate a PC in my Mac and still run fantastic free software and OS's from as far back as the 1990s. Beat the Man.

Exactly! I too used Photoshop for years, but not anymore since it's now a monthly subscription. I miss owning Photoshop (and at one time I had Paint Shop Pro)....Oh, and Flash. Way back in the day I made an entire website using Flash. Oh gosh, the early days of the internet were awesome.
LOL, I used Frontpage to create a website once.

I couldn't agree more! I too don't participate in all the strategic shady tactics to just keep getting money from us. And I wholeheartedly agree about Adobe! Yes, eff em. haha 😝 That's not a bad idea about getting a used Mac with FCP installed... I'll see how it goes with trying to get the one I have useable again. Also, I've never tried Parallels, but wow, that sounds like an interesting workaround for this type of thing. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks toob for all the info!

I understand your problem. I took to keeping a note book of I.D.s and passwords and put it my safe lockbox.
Same here, only I keep it in desk drawer, of this computer desk. BC is younger, no doubt, but I had to give up, depending on memory for passwords and logins, years ago. I hate it for her, though.

Oh man, don't get me started. I've been enrolled in the VA medical system for a long time. A few years ago, they decided to let Cerner revamp the system. When they did, it threw a few wrenches in the works that took numerous hours to resolve. Fast forward to today. Now, in addition to two factor authentication, you can only sign in with Login.gov or ID.me. So far I have about 8 hours in what was billed as a 10 minute job and I still have to set up a video interview or go in person to verify my identity. What a headache.

Well, I HAVE to run Parallels to run more than one OS because I have a virtual HDD. You see, I run a RAIDed computer and my hard drive is spread across four HDDs, so I can't partition the drive. But on a regular MAC, you should be able to partition the drive through the Mac utility and run different OSs in each. Maybe run an older OS that your current FCP is compatible with. Just a thought. But Parallels is nice. One cool thing is that it lets me allocate CPU cores, so many for the MacOS, so many for other OS.

That is pure insane bullshit. Quantum computing would fix all that which is why they will likely delay it in consumer's hands for a very long time like they did with HDTV. Japan had HD TV a DECADE before the USA.

That's actually a brilliant idea, because yes, I'm almost positive that my FCP program will work on the older OS. I just quickly checked their pricing, and it's surprisingly more affordable than I thought it would be. I'm going to have to think about this, and if I can't recover my old account, I might just do that. Thanks again! :)

It looks like you added on to your earlier post after I read it, so I didn't see that at first. But anyway... If worse comes to worst, I might have to do that (re-buy FCP) but of course I'd rather not, lol. Thanks

Don't own any Apple stuff, so don't know if there is any open source stuff written for them. Sometimes it's crapware, but some of it is very good and free for personal use.

After a quick online search the best explanation I found (presented by numerous people) is Final Cut has lost so much popularity it's upgrades are on the back burner. They claim it will eventually be upgraded but no one is sure when. I've also read that people with M1 chips have no problem running Final Cut.
Remember this info is all internet gleaned so take it with a grain of salt.

It's been a long time since I posted this thread, but I wanted to give a good news update....

Amazingly, I accidentally found the old phone number (FINALLY) that was necessary for me to access my old Apple ID account in order to do the update. So after a bit of a waiting period, I was able to access that account and I just did the update... so now I have Final Cut Pro back!

:clap::clap::clap: :thewave::thankusmile: 🙌

Thanks for the suggestions and help on this thread, but the problem is finally resolved...189 days later.

I understand your problem. I took to keeping a note book of I.D.s and passwords and put it my safe lockbox.
I've been doing a version of this as well, but digitially.

I don't like the online password management tools, of any stripes.

I like to be able to see my password.

I already purchased it, and it wasn't cheap. You're saying I should accept that they want to do BOTH that initial "one-time" charge, and now a monthly subscription? If that's the case, forget it. I love that program, but I don't want to do that just on principle.
I bet there's things that work 90% as good for free.

.... and seriously feel like pulling my hair out. 😖

So I updated my laptop to the newest OS (Sequoia 15.01) and now I can no longer use Final Cut Pro (my video editing program) because it says it needs to be updated. It's not useable at all until it gets updated, I can't even open it. I always updated it no problem, for years, but now when I try to update it, it's saying it was purchased under a different Apple ID.

Well I don't remember my old Apple ID, but I figured maybe it was my main email that I've had for years. So I tried logging in to that old Apple ID, and of course I don't know the password. I did the "forgot password" thing and it wants to send me a verification code to a phone number I had probably 10 years ago, in Baja! Not only do I no longer have access to that phone, I don't remember the number...My only clue is the last 2 digits. But I need to find that old number, because according to Apple Customer Service (who I was on the phone with for over an hour) if I can find that old number, they can try to do an account recovery. Apart from that, they pretty much said I'm screwed.

I've been searching through old emails, from years ago, to try to find that old number. But I've had so many different phone numbers since then, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I'm not sure what else to do.

All I really want to do is use Final Cut Pro. 😓 And I definitely don't want to re-purchase it, because I'm not sure but I get the feeling they're doing the "subscription" thing now, instead of a one-time purchase like before. And there's no way I'm going to pay them monthly for a program I already have...it just needs to be updated!

If you read this far, thanks for listening to this rant. Any ideas are welcome.

If this is in the wrong section, then sorry.
All of this is by design. To get more money out of you, and make sure you own nothing.
Software makers everywhere have switched to the subscription model. A model where you never own the software - you just pay them to access it.
It has extraordinarily increased their profits, you pay way-way more for the same software over time. Way more.

Go back through your paper records from years ago. Look for correspondance where you may have included the old phone number:
  • Tax Records
  • Medical Records
  • Automotive Maintenance Record
  • Autromotive Purchase Records
  • etc.

This is kind of a side topic.

But I highly recommend two things:

#1 GET A RESPECTED PASSWORD MANAGER

I use 1PASSWORD, they kind of want you in a subscription model, but there is still the ability to get a standard license if you dig. We went with subscription because we use the family model. There is the family "vault", my "vault", my wifes "vault", and my sons "vault".

You can have different vaults and controll who has access which give each their privacy seperate from a shared vault.

I like 1PASSWORD because it's not just about passwords, sure you have a "Login Record" where you can store all types of things like Account Name, Account Number, User Name, Password, Web Address, Notes, etc. But there a lot of other types of "records" such as:
  • Person Accounts which you can use like a contacts lists: Names, Address, Date of Birth, etc. - anything you want.
  • Credit Cards
  • Secure Images of docuemnts
  • etc.
The information is highly encrypted but you can access it from your phone, desktop, tablet, etc. And the information on any plateform is real time. Add a new entry on your phone and it's instantly available on the desktop.

And no more one password for everyting. You have one password to access the program, then you have random/complex passwords for different accounts. You just copy/paste them when loging in. MUCH more secure.

#2 DIGITIZE YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS
Use a small desktop scanner, scan documents to PDF, and then store digitally. There are programs that you can use. But I just created a Main Folder and then different types of documents go into specific folders, for example:
  • Each Tax Year is it's own folder
  • Each Vehcile Has its own folder
  • Folder for House Purchase
  • Folder for Mortgage payments
  • One each for Utility
  • Etc.
BACKUP: Once you start digitizing documents its important to have a backup in case of emergency. So I ahve my main computer, a portable drive where a backup exists, and you can use online storage for off site safety.

In case of emergency I dont need to grab paper files, just grab the backup drive and head to the door and I have electronic copies of all important documents going back to the 1980's. Much easier than trying to grab paper files.

Just my 2 cents.

Not to mention their access to YOUR work. I know-----they wouldn't misuse that info. SURE. And there is no such thing as voter fraud and illegal immigration either.

Allen would approve of this message.
He and I would not play that. :nono:
Neither would GenieBen, ever. Nor most of us. This is what software manipulation is made for. 😝
Neither would our Taiwan friend. No. We are who we are. We'd have a crack for that to make it permanent activated.
What good is a thing that doesn't work?

I am at a loss for what to do about it. The software that I have--AutoCad, Photoshop, etc is pretty much useless as it isn't compatible with any of the newer operating systems and I am opposed to subscription services. I guess I will eventually return to antiquity and live in the real world. LOL.
