I almost got hacked today

Somebody managed to hack into my Amazon online account and tried to purchase a few thousand dollars' worth of stuff. Thankfully they did not succeed cuz they have to provide a security code that Amazon sends to my cell phone, which they didn't have. So, I dodged a bullet there. Don't know how they did it, but I changed all my passwords just in case.
Chances they pulled a trick to get your account using a tactic called phishing.
I got a notice today to collect my new $50,000 car and home by contacting them. I knew it was phishing.

Very recently, like last month, WHILE DRIVING, I got notification from my CC company that I had purchased something from Lowe' via text message which I set up for it to tell me any time my card is charged, where, and how much. Knowing I had not, I tried calling the CC customer support. While she was asking me tons of verification questions, this person charged ANOTHER Lowe's order to my card. I said "Look lady, shut my ******* card down, they're charging it as we speak!!!" Turns out they didn't hack my CC, they somehow got into my Lowes account. They purchased a dishwasher and something else from Lowes in Nashville. But I was listed as the pick up person. I don't know what they thought they had accomplished.
Might have been a Somalin.

and everyone... Make sure that if you are still on windows 10..... that you get the security updates on-line that you didn't get from microsoft... there is a site you can go to for those updates...
Also... check for malware....
I am using Windows 11. So far nothing taken from me.

Yeah, I get those sometimes. I got one that said I was going to be charged like $500 to automatically renew a subscription for the Geek Squad at Best Buy, but the sender wasn't from BB. The email even had the Best Buy logo.

My brother's son is a tech wizard.....if I wanted a gaming computer I could get the best for less from him
you could and he would likely shop online for the best deals too
there is a reason newegg has been around for 20+ years
I was one of their earliest customers
been building my own and for friends and family since 2000
I only use the best and they are all still working

I just recently pulled out my core2duo from 15 years ago, fired right up

11 is fine... but people with 10 are no longer getting updates automatically and they can miss security updates...
I'm still on Windows 10, but my computer was eligible for free Extended Security Updates from Microsoft until October 2026, so I'm getting those. But then I'll have to upgrade in the fall. But it buys me time.

I've had this happen to me a few times too. The shopping cart was loaded up with all sorts of weird things every time. Thankfully nothing was ever purchased, and it hasn't happened to me recently. Sadly, as far as I know, changing your password is the only thing that can be done unless you get rid of your account with the place all together.

God bless you always!!!

I feel so soiled.

Weird, the guy left his name and address for where to ship the stuff he bought or tried to buy on my dime.
That name and address could've been anyone's name and address. If they are going to be guilty of one thing, why stop with just that one form of wrong? In other words, don't automatically assume anything.

God bless you always!!!

Run a Malware scan... you can use Malwarebytes or a program like it... most have a free scan and temporary free PC protection...
Contact Amazon by phone to secure that account... call any credit card bank you have listed with Amazon and inform them...
And change passwords and add a two step verification...
I bought 3 lifetime keys for WMB 15 years ago, it's a great program that catches the pesky, go to a webiste and it's compromised.....blocked

the fucked themselves by going to a sub system now like avast and other's and they don't understand they are not as important as they were 10+years ago

bad business model........just hope they stay afloat as I like it, it works and I have 3 keys forever

No threats found. I changed all my passwords and made sure the addresses and phone numbers were correct. My Amazon account requires a two-step verification like you said, and so the hacker didn't get anything from me. So, it worked as it should have; I thought it was a waste of time back when I set it up but now I'm glad I did it.
looks like something internal at amazon which is what happened to my wife
nothing you can do, it's not your end
amazon as huge with security this should not happen but when you have 100M likely
it's hard to catch the thief
