Illinois house passes bill requiring 18-20 year olds to hand over certain semi automatic firemarms

While I don't think this will have what I assume is the desired affect, isn't this just raising the age limit for certain firearms? Age-restricted items do have the age limit changed from time to time.

how about raising the right to due process to the age of 21

how about raising the right to peacefully assemble to the age of 21

If this passes, I doubt anyone will turn in a weapon...

Well at least nobody who plans to use it illegally. Of course, those who refuse become criminals. It is really quite a moral dilemma. Is this the camel’s nose under the tent towards disarming the citizenry, or is it a reposible law to enhance the safety of the citizens?

Unfortunately the question is clouded by mutual distrust on both sides of the issue.

personally i say in America it is immoral to target a class of citizens to deny them a right

I would agree, but others could argue that we do not have a clear demarcation between a minor and an adult. I think you would agree that it is reasonable to not allow any person of any age to buy a gun. The real question is what is the reasonable age. 16 years old to drive a car, 21 years old to buy alcohol or marijuana (where its legal), 21 years old to gamble (where its legal), 18 years old to watch a porno at the movie theater (do those still exist?). Some would say when you enlist at 18 they give you a gun. Others would say, yes they give you a gun, but they also teach you to use it, and they subject you to psychological scrutiny to try to weed out those who shouldn’t have a gun.

Do you oppose an 18 year old age requirement on owning/purchasing firearms?

I have no idea how the SCOTUS would rule on this. I don't know if age requirements for gun rights have ever been discussed, really. There are certainly some valid arguments against a 21 year old age requirement as opposed to an 18 year old requirement.

However, I believe there are already some 21 year old requirements for gun purchases, which muddies the water a bit. For example, the Gun Control Act of 1968 requires someone to be 21 to buy a pistol.

I'm not in favor of raising the age requirements, my point was that it isn't an unprecedented change.

indeed in fact there even is a thread on this board wondering about why are children committing mass shootings

are 18 19 and 20 year old really children -maybe -

if so then we should raise the age of majority to 21 or perhaps 26 using obamacare rules

and take all adult decision making away from them until that age has been reached

^^^^ This.

I don't know what sort of rulings have been made regarding age requirements and firearms. A quick search did not give me much information. I may see what I can dig up tomorrow, or maybe someone else knows about rulings that have already been made on the subject.

Varying age requirements have always been a bit frustrating.

Disarm more LEGAL firearm owners to curb the criminals who ILLEGALLY possess a firearm that won't hand in shit.

Only logical in the retarded leftist brain.

i thought i have been more then clear on that

i reject the targeting of any class of citizens to have a right denied

i would say they would reject the targeting of citizens to be denied a right

this is why i used the examples of raising the right of due process to 21

or to peacefully assemble to the age of 21

the 2nd amendment is a right not a privilege such as smoking or drinking

I don't know if age requirements for gun rights have ever been discussed

i am unaware of this issue in any level of the courts federal or state

I believe there are already some 21 year old requirements for gun purchases, which muddies the water a bit.

not necessarily so if it has never been tested in the courts

there would be two questions

is it legal to restrict a class of citizens from enjoying a right

and

two Is the 2nd Amendment incorporated across the nation

unconstitutional laws may be around a long time before they get challenged

One hopes that the Illinois house regains it's sanity as soon as possible.

i will have to look it up

i believe there is a lower courts ruling in favor of age limiting but never has

gone to the supreme court

Illinois House Passes Bill Requiring 18-20-Year-Olds to Hand Over Certain Semi-Automatic Firearms
A bill requiring 18-20 year olds to hand over or transfer ownership of heretofore legally possessed “assault weapons” is gaining sponsors in the Illinois Senate after passing the House last month.
------------------------------------

Well first off I would say screw you , second off they should rightfully be grand fathered in should it pass. Legally who the hell are they to say turn in your weapons. This is a gun grab ..........
butbutbutt, the leftists said they would never support that!

another in a long list of lies.

hope the owners execute any traitor that comes to rob them.
Kind a like keeping your doctor and insurance… In all 57 states and under sniper fire?

"...semi automatic firemarms"

"firemarms"? Is that like a flaming mutha or a super hot MILF?

The commies are coming for your guns. Register first, then disarm. A helpless populace, an uneducated populace is more easily controlled.

Don't bet the farm on it...

They tried the same thing a few years ago in New York State (with adults) and it didn't work. Even the cops told them to F off. You want my guns, come and try to take them. Be sure to bring the body bags. The cops won't enter a school to save a bunch of poor kids but they will shoot it out with a peaceful citizen minding their own business just to take their (originally) lawful guns? Fuck Fascism. Fuck the Commies.
