If Asteroid Apophis Hits Earth

all you would see is a bright light overhead for 1-3 seconds before you were annihilated by a blistering shock front of blinding light, wind and heat that would toast you before the thing even hit.

I HATE IT when that happens.

There would not be much to see. It would come in at probably something like 90,000 mph, and all you would see is a bright light overhead for 1-3 seconds before you were annihilated by a blistering shock front of blinding light, wind and heat that would toast you before the thing even hit.

have you ever thought, maybe us earth beings are calling this thing Apophis,
But the Alien community might be calling it the Bug Zapper?

Well, Near Earth Objects are a real concern and sooner or later, one is really going to get us. The Chelyabinsk bolide from a decade ago was only 60 feet in diameter yet imparted more than 30X the energy than the Hiroshima nuclear bomb. It would have been much worse but what saved the region was the very shallow angle it hit the atmosphere with allowing it to explode high up in the sky.

While people squabble over land, territories and the next president, they ought to really be a lot more worried about these things. Our ability to stop, destroy or even deflect so small an object as Chelyabinsk (or even detect them in time) much less one the size of Apophis or bigger is uncertain at best. And forget about one larger than that. Bigger ones need detected years in advance and met far out in space where they can be coaxed into new trajectories. Problem is that some come from the direction of the Sun and cannot be seen until nearly upon us.

This is really a matter which should be deserving a full international effort into addressing.

Well, if they were to nuke it at just the right time after it skims the Earth in 5 years heading back out into space away from us then the fragments would likely be sent into new trajectories and most of them would likely never find their way back to Earth.
Yup

An anthill existed in Central Park for thousands of generations of ants. 🐜

One day, the ants figured out that there were humans walking around their hill that they never noticed before.

Now the ants live in a constant state of panic that they will be stepped on.

Roll the dice and a month before, buy a beach front home on the W coast for pennies on the dollar?

I don't know what we are gonna do, Bruce Willis has the dementia and Michael Clark Duncan is dead.

Jokes aside I’m starting to have faith that we could do something about it thanks to Elon Musk.

If not, surf's up to Denver!

it will go away, all on its own, in about 2 weeks.

and if it don't/ i would have voted for a giant asteroid if it had been onthe ballot.

It has to hit a magic spot in space, if it does that the odds of it hitting in 2036 rise to a near certainty.

If that scenario happens it will impact in the Pacific west of the Channel Islands.

At least it would give us years to figure out what to do.
