U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that it has removed 65,682 illegal immigrants from the United States since President Donald Trump took office earlier this year. The agency revealed that a large majority of those arrested included individuals with prior criminal convictions or charges.

ICE Acting Director Todd M. Lyons said that three-quarters of the arrests were of criminal illegal immigrants, highlighting the effort as part of a measure to ensure public safety and national security. “The brave men and women of ICE protect our families, friends and neighbors by removing threats to our communities,” Lyons stated.

Approximately 2,288 of those arrested were identified as gang members from notorious groups such as MS-13, 18th Street, and Tren de Aragua. The statistics revealed arrests of individuals convicted of serious crimes, including 1,329 sex offenses and 498 murders. A further 9,639 faced charges or convictions for assaults, 6,398 for DWIs or DUIs, and 1,479 for weapon offenses.

In the ruling, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote “it is well established that the Fifth Amendment entitles aliens to due process of law in deportation proceedings.”

How it works in practice: Immigrants have the right to due process. But in reality, says, Andrew Arthur, a resident fellow in law and policy at the conservative Center for Immigration Studies, “courts of law run the gamut.”

In some cases, immigrants are not granted a hearing at all. When asked about the president’s tweet, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders pointed to the process of “expedited removal,” which was created by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.

“Just because you don’t see a judge doesn’t mean you aren’t receiving due process,” Sanders said.

Under the expedited removal process, immigrants who have been in the country illegally for less than two years and are apprehended within 100 miles of the border can be deported almost immediately without going through a court hearing.

The exception is asylum seekers, who must be granted a hearing.

Those who are not processed through expedited removal have the right to due process in an immigration court, where the main goal is to decide whether a person has a legal claim to remain in the U.S.

There is so much bullshit there it is hard to unpack. No, the United States is not the only country that grants asylum. Matter of fact, we are under treaty obligation and international law, we are required to grant asylum to those that qualify.

And yes, those that claim asylum, and no, it is not some magic word, people have to demonstrate a real possibility that they can be granted asylum, people are turned away every single day. But those that are granted temporary asylum are due a hearing. So, let's hire some damn judges. Seems that is the place to start.
