I just got banned at a place because they read my PMS with a friend I knew from a different place, and the only way I got banned there is because they did that, and I told him it could happen; And it did. I know he didn't snitch me out, they read the PM and that was it.
At that place it's either tow the commie party line or be silenced, and USMB is not that place.

This thread is not meant as a debate about if this site is doing massive censorship or not, since it absolutely is. The thread is about speculating what the community would look like without it.

It is very shallow to assume that censorship is not happening just because you aren't seeing it. Censorship is not meant to be seen, since it is meant as a way to cheat. Censorship is already deceptively difficult to identify because the evidence disappears, but it is WAY more difficult to see if if your mission is to promote the notion that it isn't happening. The intent of the censorship is that you DON'T know that it is happening, which means your perception of this community has been engineered. You've been tricked.

My very first foray into an online political debate forum was in '96. It was a newly put up forum by our local TV affiliate WFAA. There were no rules and no mods.

After a couple of months it looked just like you would imagine if every shithead was allowed to post the most vile things that they could come up with. Evil people have nothing on anonymous evil people.

They were freaking out, made up a rule sheet, and assigned some mods, but it was too little, too late.
After a week, they shut it down, never to be reopened again.

"Free speech" only applies in the public sector, not in the private sector.
