I was in the Meat Cutters union and benefitted greatly. I'm all for unionism as long as it doesn't bankrupt the businesses that it succeeds in organizing. This happened to the last supermarket I worked for. Six months after being organized the store closed. I had the occasion to sit down with the young union organizer before the owner signed the contract. He didn't give a shit if the store did go out of business.
A dozen full time employees, some with young families, as well as a dozen part time kids lost their jobs. The store never reopened.
Many stories about the excesses of the unions destroying businesses, careers, and employment. Corruption within big unions is legendary.
