How Jon Stewart turned lies into comedy and brainwashed a generation

Republicans don't have a sense of humor, either.
Let's not overdo it shall we.

As a general rule, conservatives aren't that funny. Or more accurately, conservatives have a really hard time making good comedy that encompasses conservative values. They usually put the politics first, at the cost of the bit. They almost always take the conservative equivalent of Janeane Garofalo. There are exceptions, of course. Ron White is fucking hysterical. His 'Execution Express Lane' bit was hilarious. But his kind are few and far between.

Too bad for the left wing, wonder where they will now get their news.

So Brian Williams goes out (for six months) humiliated and derided. Jon Stewart goes out (permanently, one hopes) the same day, but on a giant Comedy Homecoming King float, with a 21-gun salute from the media, his path strewn with roses and teardrops.

Why?

Brian Williams lied about his personal exploits a few times. Jon Stewart was unabashedly and habitually dishonest.

Rose O'Donnell? Whoopie Goldberg? Joy Behar? Bill Maher?

how idiots confuse parody and satire with lies.

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn

John Stewart isn't a journalist. Ending the entire premise of the article.

did you read the article?

I did. Before it was posted here. And its premise is that John Stewart is an irresponsible journalist.

He's neither. He's a comedian and satirist.

Can we agree with this statement: Journalism is gathering, processing, and dissemination of news and information related to the news to an audience. The word applies to both the method of inquiring for news and the literary style which is used to disseminate it.[1][2]

Isn't this exactly what Stewart did but put a his own twist on the story much like FOX news is ACCUSED of doing?

Jon Stewart is a satirist.

Satire:

the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

That's what Jon Stewart does. You might as well accuse the Onion or Saturday Night Live of bad journalism. Republicans may not be able to tell the difference between Satire and journalism. But everyone else can.

They have to claim that satire and journalism are the same thing, held to the same standards for their idiot argument to work.

And that dog won't hunt.

No, everyone cannot.

Watch Leno do his thing where he asks questions on the street.

Kids don't know jackshit, think Manual Labor is the President of Mexico.

Leno's man on the street bit is a comedy. Its edited to be funny. Folks know exactly who Leno is. If they want to be part of the bit, they need to memorable. So they are.

Only an idiot would take a man on the street comedy bit as some sociological study. It would be like assuming Borat accurately reflected American values with the Americans he choose to show.

He just plays one on TV.

This is an NYP Op/Ed by someone quite insanely jealous of Stewart.

But, as Stewart said to Tucker Carlson when he was on Crossfire: He's on Comedy Central and Tucker is on CNN. Get it, moron?

Watch how he has Tucker Carlson practically on his knees....5:30 minutes in and Tucker's down and out.

He plays a satirical journalist on TV. You know that Dennis Miller during Weekend Update wasn't *really* giving an update of the week's news, right? Same with Jimmy Fallon and Amy Poehler. They're doing a bit.

If you didn't get that, consider this your wake up call.

This is some weak tea. I know that Jon Stewart bugged some folks on the right. But trying to argue that satire and journalism are the same thing and held to the same standards is one of the stupidest arguments I've heard in recent memory.

So I guess your contention that because students watch Stewart and take his brand of journalism seriously it doesn't mean they should because he is on comedy central. I think that would hold water if Stewart didn't take himself so seriously.

he presents news satirically but that is still journalism. What he is doing to giving the news and an editorial at the same time with a comedy lean.

Jon Stewart isn't a journalist. Your entire argument is predicated on Jon Stewart 1) Being a journalist 2) Being held to the same standards as other journalists

Neither are true. In fact, the entire argument is stupid. What else have you got?

When you watch a stand up comedian and laugh at their lines, why do you laugh? Because something they said has a kernel of truth or else it wouldn't be funny.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are two of my biggest TV heroes. We haven't heard the last of Stewart - and Colbert is replacing Letterman. Comedy and truth prevail.
