the mail volume was nothing back then....compare it to the 90's....28 billion pieces compared to 100 billion....big difference....The article linked above is from 2018.
In the years since, Biden signed the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022.
The bill repeals the requirement that the USPS annually prepay future retirement health benefits.
Interesting post though, informative on a situation that I hadn't previously paid attention to.
As far as future USPS changes go, in the early 1950s they cut home mail deliveries per week in half. It's time they should halve them once again.

doesnt matter people still have to deal with the volume after the machines are done...do you know why they cut the deliveries in half?....because of the increase in mail volume, cant deliver twice a day anymore, not enough time....There has also been a big jump in available technology over the past 70 years.

This image shows a typical manual sorting station, in this case in Los Angeles in 1951. Mail is separated and cleaned up on the desks closest to the camera, and then sorted in the rows of pigeon holes further away.

thats because every day new addresses are being formed....Where technology hasn't helped is in the physical delivery of daily mail. As the postmaster explained to Congress, that requires an ever increasing staff. (link)
“There’s folks that actually deliver the mail. You don’t want to do a hiring freeze there, because if we do that, then we won’t deliver mail,” he said.
