How does Obama get away with saying overt lies about everyday life?

Too bad Pubs are total hypocrites, run up huge deficits in good times, give the farm away to the greedy rich, and wreck the country and the world...Better a solid economy built on investment in the people and the country...

Obama is a salesman. He loves the sales pitch. He just hates the actual job of governing. So he doesn't bother. His idea of an effective solution is a speech. That's it, just a speech.

After that, it's not his problem! He told you people how to fix it. It's not his problem if Congress won't do what he wants!

When it comes to the lies he tells, well, they are very carefully worded. He doesn't say "9 million people who were uninsured are now enrolled in Obamacare". That is a bald faced lie that would be disproved in the blink of an eye. . Instead he says "More than nine million Americans have signed up for private health insurance or Medicaid coverage".

He's worse than a used car salesman.

Actually, believe it or not, it's worse than that. He's an "academic" - code for Bull Shit Artist. You are correct, however. He makes a speech and he has done his "job". Papa Doc Obama told us what it is and it's up to us to just "believe it".

He's as worthless as the day is long.

A Republican who thinks Academic is synonymous with bullshit artist. This is sad, but not unusual, and probably petty jealousy.

And really, just drive down your god damn block, are there more or less houses being foreclosed upon than 2008?

Yes, for God's sake please look. Look around your middle class neighborhoods at all the people who borrowed more than they could handle. Borrowers all over the industrialized world who did this.

And ponder that there are buffoons who think the global economic crash was all because of loans to American urban darkies!

As correct as that is. I have to admit. I have seen presidents go into the SOTU and embelish or word things so they sound better. But that was the first time I ever saw one flat out lie over and over. It's like he's already in fuck it mode.

You are confusing national trends with "in my neighborhood". If you are a conservative, your local area is crap. Democratic states are floating you.

In live in New York, in the most populated suburban region in the Northern Hemisphere (Long Island). When I drive from Port Jefferson to New York City, I pass by millions of homes, tens of thousands of businesses and many colleges and school districts.

Try again.

I have both the curse and privilege of being witness to America's downfall, with the destruction of the middle class --- and that middle class dominates the suburbs of America.

And not only do I have that privilege, but so do the other 7.4 million legal residents of Long Island, and the additional 2.8 million illegal residents that are displacing us.

Bring all the lemmings you want, deliver whatever snide and snark remarks you wish, spew all the manufactured statistics you can count, and puke all the propaganda that you swallow.

It doesn't make your comment any less anechdotal.

Spewing insults doesn't make you any more correct, either.

Opinions are as numerous as assholes. Everyone has got one.

1. The economy is functioning well below its potential. Corporations, who are sitting on historic levels of cash, lack consumers. Obama is wrong to characterize poor growth as a recovery - so I agree with the OP.

2. Where did all the consumers go? In the 80s (through trade liberalization) we made it much easier for our capitalists to shift production to freedom hating nations like China where they benefited from ultra cheap labor costs. This boosted the profits and portfolios of one group of Americans, but it lowered the wages and benefits of another group, namely American workers who have seen their great postwar manufacturing jobs (with high wages and benefits) get replaced by the Reaganized, low-wage Walmart jobs. To make up for lost wages and lost jobs, we financialized the economy and made it easier for poor people to borrow money. In short, we spent 30 years fueling consumption with credit (debt). Now consumer debt has finally destroyed the purchasing power of too many consumers. The housing bubble, which was fueled by the largest Wall Street Ponzi scheme in history, took too many consumers out of an economy that was hanging on by a thread.

3. To make matters worse. Every president before Obama kept funding open to the states during recessionary cycles, so they didn't have to layoff teachers, cops, firemen, constructions crews and any number of administrative jobs. All these workers were also consumers whose purchasing power helped prevent main street from having to layoff workers. In fact, the great Libertarian Reagan added more government jobs during his first recession than any president since FDR. Reagan preached a good game about small government, but he was a very shrewd man, and he understood full well that the government needed to boost spending during recessions, and then withdraw that spending once the engine started up again. The sequester has forced Obama to cut off aid to the states, leading to massive layoffs, which itself translates into far less consumer spending. This almost makes me want to vote Republican in the next election. Because when a Republican is in office, they don't layoff federal workers or cut off aid to the states when the economy needs consumers. Government has always subsidized the supply and demand side.

Here is the thing. I agree with all of the facts you present. The "functioning well below it's potential" is the curious thing.

This is the real GDP per capita since 2000.

fredgraph.png

It has just managed to pass the prerecession peak.

It would be better if it returned to the pre recession trend line, for sure. This, though, seems an unrealistic expectation. There is simply a limit to how fast the economy can grow. Output isn't reasonably characterized as "poor growth". It is reasonably characterized as normal growth.

So, I am a bit cautious about saying "functioning well below it's potential" without some qualification as to what "it's potential" can be.

This is the employment to population ratio (EMRATIO). I've started it in 1980 to highlight the change that occured in 2000.

fredgraph.png

It did fall back to 1982-84 levels. It continues to be flat. That is, basically, neutral. It's not great. It's not bad.

This is the labor force participation rate.

fredgraph.png

It fell back to pre 1980 levels on the recession. It has improved since, now at about 6.5%. Fact is that the natural (expected) rate of unemployment ranges from 5 to 7%.

What happens if the unemployment rate is driven below it's natural rate, by gov't and fed policy, is that major inflation ensues.

The economy did lose ground, falling over a decade what it took a decade and a half to get to. There is no reason to expect that it will return to 2008 levels for a decade.

All growth indicators present that the economy has recovered as well as can be realistically expected. The unemployment rate has fallen on a straight tragectory since the end of the recession and is now about as good as we can realistically expect.

The turning point in the economy began in 1998-2000 as China began to become a larger global competitor.

US economic output was driven by real estate. An unfortunate part of that was simply speculation. That growth isn't reflected in the EMRATIO or CIVPART. That was a problem. The structure of economic growth was off. My personal opinion is that this crowded out more stable, long term structural growth. Structural changes aren't going to happen any faster than it has.

The New York unemployment rate is languishing .5% behind the national rate of 6.5%

fredgraph.png

BTW, capitalizing, coloring red, and increasing font size doesn't make you any more right as well.

"looking out your windows" is simply meaningless when considering the national and global economy.

Here is the problem, you need to move to North Dakota. Then you would have a completly different opinion. Historically, North Dakota unemployment is well below the national average.

This is the real GDP yearly growth rates

fredgraph.png

The problem with "below its potential" becomes a bit fuzzy. If we want to use 1980 as the potential, then GDP growth has been "below its potential" since then. It is been "below its potential" since 2000.

This is the potential gdp growth rate.

fredgraph.png

At least by CBO projections, it isn't below its potential.

The definition being, "Real potential GDP is the CBO’s estimate of the output the economy would produce with a high rate of use of its capital and labor resources. The data is adjusted to remove the effects of inflation."

In the long run, how high can it go? If the labor force participation rate were 100%? Can it even be 100%?

I agree, it isn't as good at 2000 or 2004. Still, I don't think we can conclude that it hasn't recovered or that it is "well below its potential."

6.3% of LI homes with mortgages in foreclosure - Newsday

Long Island's share of homes in foreclosure fell last month.
Of all local homes with mortgages, 6.3 percent were in foreclosure in December, down 0.5 percentage points from a year before, according to a report released Wednesday by Core-Logic, a real estate data firm in Irvine, Calif.

Newsday is a shill paper.

Where was Newsday on January 9th when over 1000 Islip and Brookhaven residents were forcibly removed from Brookhaven TOwn Hall on the eminent domain seizures of their property?

A View From The Ronkonkoma Trenches | The Libertarian Party of Suffolk County, New York

Every newspaper in Suffolk County reported that --- EXCEPT NEWSDAY

You do know that the tyrannical GOP outnumbers the Dems 9 to 1 in the Brookhaven legislature!

Yes and?

Newsday is a shill for the entrenched political fiefdoms on the Northeastern coast, regardless of party.

Would you care to explain why all the local patches and local grassroots organizations reported the removal of 1000 local residents, but Newsday didn't?

Also, on a side note, the New York GOP cannot be distinguished from national Democratic Party, other than some tax cuts, which even Cuomo has implemented for new businesses. In New York, you're a T or an P, Tyrant or Patriot, the Oathkeepers have pretty much come to dominate the conservative power vacuum in Suffolk County, won't be long before they register as a party, since they are already the primary organizing force of the Suffolk County Constitution/Liberty movement.

Obama cites a bunch of manufactured statistics about the economy and says it's getting better...

Yet, anyone who leaves their house, has 5+ friends, and look around their neighborhood, knows that there are More foreclosed houses on their block and there are more personal friends and family than ever that are unemployed, many of which have to bunk up in the same house with one another to make ends meet.

Obama cites and brags about making "Student Loans" better since he took office, yet we have RECORD number of college kids graduating with degrees, in very high debt and not able to get a job. And all you have to do is talk to your relatives and friends to discover this simple truth.

And really, just drive down your god damn block, are there more or less houses being foreclosed upon than 2008?

Hey, how about you healthcare premiums that skyrocketed LOLOLOLOLOL

You must have had a heart attack when you found out the Bush administration lied 946 times to justify the attack of Iraq.

North Dakota has pride in its itself, it's the only state with a functioning State Bank, that shields her from the economic tides of Washington.

It's a great idea. That North Dakota invests in it's economy and people is excellent. And it surely does help stabalize and grow the state economy.

It also helps that North Dakota has the second smallest gross state output.

North Dakota was, for many years, pretty low on the per capita income. It is now 6th highest. It gained considerably on the recession though it was trending up since 2006 or earlier.

Well, I'm better off now than I was at the depth of the recession. My house is back to value, as are my investments. My wife still lost all her benefits, but her income is back to about 80% of it, and mine's the same ... though I'm carrying her on health insurance.

It could be better. I think obamacare's a drain on jobs, but the gop is actually worse. Global warming's real, though man's impact is less so. Nevertheless, we've regulated all kind of pollutants by "cap and trading them." It's hardly socialism. China's the worst offender, but if we have no regulations, we have no juice (-: to use with them.

The worst I can say about the guy is that his policies have resulted (or at least failed to do anything about) income disparity and THAT was the entire agrument for universal care.
