I believe it is a monetary problem. Low pop density means low $/acre (literally) which depresses economic conditions leading to low output and conservative positions.

The simple fact is that it is investment. Every company borrows money to expand their market reach.

The other fact that goes ignored is that the entire money supply is created out of borrowing. If there was no debt, there would be no money and the economy would grind to a complete stop.

The only question is where that borrowing should be.

Regardless, penny for penny, government debt equals private savings.
