How does anything improve without the profit incentive...

Anything?>

Like, open ended, all aspects of life?
Well let's get very very basic.
Without the first person who killed more then he could eat that exchanged his meat for sexual gratification with a starving female who
exchanged her body to stay alive... she profited.. he profited!
That is the basic premise.
She get's pregnant. HE feeds her and has a son that grows and hunts adding to the profit!
That's how it's been since the beginning!

Are you a Christian?

Do you think that NFL and Soccer teams do not have a profit motive?

You do understand that the NFL is actually a socialist-based system, right?

The NFL Commissioner: Roger Goodell

Roger Goodell presides over the most successful entertainment entity in America: the NFL, where revenues and ratings are soaring. Goodell takes Steve Kroft inside this $10 billion business, which Goodell says "combines socialism and capitalism."

It's a pretty important point to overlook that simply making an invention and subsequently profiting from it, does not mean that profit was your motive.

Hence the quote in re: to necessity.

You are correct. Thomas Edison has I don't know how many patents and profit was never his objective. Matter of fact, he really didn't like it when people were making a killing off his inventions. Edison just liked to invent stuff. Of course he did become rather wealthy off his inventions.

Ernie Fraze was a tool and die maker in Dayton Ohio. He invented the pop top can. He did it as a challenge and because he kinda stumbled on his method. He didn't set out to make a fortune. But he did anyway.

The NFL is different from the individual teams that make it up. the individual teams make huge profits and pay huge taxes on them, the NFL i.e. Goodell, has convinced the IRS that it is a non-profit. But that is about to change.

BTW, Goodell is full of shit on just about every issue. He has been a terrible commissioner and needs to go.

Well then what's the example of a business with no profit motive that this thread is trying to disparage?

nothing was being disparaged. Just making the point that profit is the reason that 99,9% of businesses exist.

churches and charities do not make a profit, but they must keep income equal to expenses or they will fold.

Just a note... churches and charities GENERALLY don't make or provide any services that they "charge" so where do they get their income?
From people's donations.
Where do people get money to make donations?
Generally from the paycheck or investments.
Generally speaking most people work for businesses that are in business to make a profit.

SO how would churches and charities exist without the donations from people that earned salaries that came from businesses ..making a profit!

Salary is not profit.

Definitely and I believe Christ died for our sins because he loved us so much.. again not altruistically since Christ wants us to accept that fact, i.e. Christ wants something!

Salary is not profit.

The business that pays the salaries needs to make a profit or else they go out of business...DUMMY!
If they business goes out of business there are no salaries. If there are less salaries there are less donations. Less donations means churches and charities might cease!

Sometime, profit IS the improvement. Republicans are blind to everything except money.

My credit union doesn't make a profit and it's not going out of business. My electric co-op doesn't make a profit and it's not going out of business.

Do you even know what a non-profit is? Did you even read your own link?

"profit IS the improvement"??
Who was talking about money in the "thread title: "How does anything improve without the profit incentive"???
Was there money mentioned in that discussion?

MY point of the thread though was without any "GAIN" after deducting any expenses you can be a nonprofit entity for sure!
But without any GAIN where will you get the money to improve?
I mean there has been extremely few ideas, improvements, businesses that didn't require some additional funds to pay for the improvement.
Another way.. how many poor people living paycheck to paycheck have enough money left over to start a business?
This is the point.
EVEN nonprofits have to buy computers, pay salaries, pay the rent... where do they get their money? Donations. Where did the donations come from?
People that have extra money. Where do some people get extra money? Profits.

Ok, lets go slow-------your credit union and electric co-op do not BOOK a profit. If they collect more than they spend (Profit) then that money is distributed to the shareholders as guess what---capital gains.

If expenses exceed income then the shareholders will get a bill at the end of the year to make up the shortfall.

You really need to look into the charters of your organizations and learn how they work.

Zeke, the ignorant toothless stumpbroke of USMB weighs in with his own special ignorance. Edison was one of the biggest self promoters of the 19th/20th century.

The abject ignorance of libs like zeke, RW, and Jake continues to amaze me. How can people become adults and remain as ignorant as an oyster?

All they do 24/7/365 is parrot the left wing lies and BS that they are fed by the dem/lib talking point generators. Never an original thought, never a rational analysis, just continuous lying bullshit.

The really sad thing is that these fools make up 30-40% of america.

I've read many of the comments that said that advances have come from nonprofit motives, i.e. Salk Vaccine..

In 1948, Salk undertook a project funded by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis The foundation is now the "March of Dimes".
From their annual report: http://www.marchofdimes.com/glue/files/2012AnnualReport_OnLineOpt.pdf

March of Dimes Gross Revenues $209.6 million

Remember... the entire Revenues come from donations THAT are tax deductible!
Total donations NOT one revenue GENERATING source ALL by donations!!!
Expense allocations for 2012
Management and General -- 10.3%
Fundraising -- 13.9%
Program services -- 75.8%
(Now the "program Services" paid the salaries of Dr. Salk and others working on the Salk Vaccine.
(Just a note of comparison..Aetna one of those EVIL capitalist health insurance companies
Management and General and sales (Fundraising!!) - 14.3%
Program services (claims) - 80%
EVIL NET Profits (30% of which were paid out in TAXES) -- 5.7%
Oh.. and by the way... this EVIL corporate health insurance company did the following:

Since 1980, more than $379 million has been awarded in grants and sponsorships, with over $30 million directed toward racial and ethnic health equity since 2001.

Corporate Philanthropy -- Aetna

NOTE:
When Jonas Salk asked rhetorically “Would you patent the sun?” during his famous television interview with Edward R. Murrow, he did not mention that the lawyers from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis had looked into patenting the Salk Vaccine and concluded that it could not be patented because of prior art – that it would not be considered a patentable invention by standards of the day
